Shema Yisrael - Listen Jews.

Shema Kolee- God listen to my voice with compassion.

As I prepare for Rosh Hashanah, I am focused on listening. Listening to myself, to others, and to God.

Truly listening takes courage, compassion, and doubt in myself, and in what I know to be true. It demands that I pair truth (emet) with anavah (humility). I am asked to acknowledge that there is so much I do not understand. As I hold a mirror up to myself, as I focus inward, may I do it with compassion on myself, and then may I carry that compassion, along with faith, into the world as I listen to and judge others. May my thoughts and actions reflect a little more doubt in myself and faith in the world as I acknowledge that there are other truths out there.

May we all be blessed with enough security to doubt ourselves. May we remember that which we do not know, while listening with curiosity and openness to God’s world and to others. May we sense enough trust so that we stay in the struggle, remaining as Yisrael, a people that struggles with God and fights for what is just in the world around us. May we know that it is in the journey that we can find ourselves and God.

May you be blessed with a year of good health, deep joy and inner contentment.

L'shanah Tovah u'Metukah.

Warmly,

Fourth Year Rabbinical Student to Join the Bimah for the High Holy Days

Hi, I'm Max Antman! I'm a fourth-year rabbinical student at Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion in Los Angeles, CA. I am also a policy junkie, and before rabbinical school, I worked as a community organizer and legislative staffer at several nonprofits in Washington D.C. But before any of that, I was a part of the Beth Emet Jewish community. Growing up in Evanston, I always thought of Beth Emet as my second home. It was amongst my Jewish community that I learned how to be a leader, how to think critically about complex ideas, and the importance of speaking out against injustice. I was a member of the Bessy board, went through Kabbalat Torah, and had some of my most formative experiences with the friends and mentors I made at Beth Emet. I am so excited to be returning home to spend the High Holy Days with a community that is so close to my heart. I look forward to seeing you all very soon!
