How many of us feel motivated to make changes after we read life affirming quotes? Something in our brain clicks and we are inspired to move forward in aspects of our lives that hold us back.
#1 New York Times bestselling author, Tony Robbins consults with athletes, entertainers, CEOs, and US presidents. I follow him on social media and have appreciated daily inspiration:
“The people who are the most alive, driven and fulfilled are those that seek to lead by a life of contribution and service to something greater than themselves.”
“The only person you should try to be better than is the person you were yesterday.”

Meer Apartments resident, Linda Bez, graduated from Mumford High School in 1958 and can still fit into her school sweater! There are many Mumford grads that live at JSL. Did you know JSL is the keeper of the Jewish Community yearbooks? The residents find it fun to peruse these to find young pictures of the older adults in their yesteryears.

WHY YOU KEEP WAKING UP AT 3 AM
|
By Ruthie Darling
You know the scene. You wake up in the middle of the night and roll over to check your phone, but you don’t really need to. You already know it’s 3am.
Most people wake up several times during the night. This is often accompanied by the body shifting its position. These nightly awakenings usually coincide with transitions from one sleep stage to another and are so brief, we often don’t remember them in the morning.
“The average adult awakens seven to 15 times each night, and this is normal,” says Michael Perlis, director of the Behavioral Sleep Medicine Program at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine. But the 3am wake up is one that can bring us out of a deep sleep and may make it hard for us to doze off again.

Jewish Senior Life is supported by our community. Through the help of our donors and volunteers, you make a difference in the lives of older adults to help them lead full and meaningful lives. Our residents care for each other and their families and stand up to do good things in the world. We come together now, as world leaders have cautioned for weeks, Russian President Vladimir Putin has launched what President Joe Biden called an “unprovoked and unjustified attack” on neighboring Ukraine. The Jewish president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, is now heading a nation under attack despite weeks of diplomatic wrangling to avoid the worst-case scenario. The military operation has triggered international condemnation, with fears of mass casualties, and many are looking to support the Ukrainian people in some capacity, with donations that go toward medical supplies, humanitarian aid, psychological services, military equipment, and other causes.
Thank you to JSL friend, Miriam Wolock who shared the website of a children’s orphanage to send aide to Ukraine. “As we watch with horror the unfolding humanitarian and geopolitical crisis in the Ukraine, here is an “A rated” charity you can support.” Miriam suggested donating to Tikva, an orphanage in Odessa that is evacuating children by bus to Moldova.

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is also collecting aid.
|
The Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit, working with the Jewish Federation of North America and our international partners, has opened a campaign to provide relief for the victims of this war. 100% of these funds will support rescue and relief efforts.

Rabbi Dovid S. Polter, Community Chaplain
My Name is Flora
With fifteen minutes to spare before I would begin leading a program for residents at Jewish Senior Life, I sat in my car and read an inspirational magazine. An article that caught my eye involved an exchange between individuals who were unaware of their Hebrew names and needed help from their Rabbi. The Rabbi advised, “Bruce” became “Baruch”, “Linda” became “Leah,” the similarity in sound is readily detected. “Flora” became “Shoshanah,” the Rabbi explained that “Flora” sounds like flower and “Shoshana” is a rose.
I found this Rabbi’s wisdom novel and creative and was inspired as I entered the senior facility. I first approached a woman who seemed to be waiting to engage in conversation. “Hi, how are you?” I asked. “What is your name?”
“Flora, she replied.”
I asked her, “What is your Hebrew name?”
She said, “Rabbi, I truly don’t know!”
So timely, I thought, and I said, “I have an idea for you. Shoshanah sounds like a fitting name for you.”
I found our meeting Beshert after learning about Hebrew names and I was able to share what I learned with Flora who was proud to receive her new Hebrew name.
To you, my readers I pose this question: “What is your Hebrew name”?
