| A CRASH COURSE IN JEWISH ESSENTIALS | Members of our diverse JSL staff have been thoroughly enjoying learning during a monthly in-person session - A Crash Course in Jewish Essentials, with Rabbi and teacher, Daniel Horwitz of Adat Shalom Synagogue, who is “committed to fostering a joyful Judaism that is inclusive, inspiring, and relevant.” (from Adat Shalom’s website). The Rabbi holds a BA in Politics, an MA in Jewish Studies, an MA in Jewish Education, an MA in Sports Management, and a JD. | |

Here is an amazing story about Eight Over Eighty honoree, Barbara Cohen. I found her story on the Zekelman Holocaust Museum social media site recently. I remember when she shared this with me, we both cried.
“Barbara Cohen’s story is just one example of how some women fought to survive and protect their families during the Holocaust. Born in 1941 under German occupation, Barbara Schechter Cohen was forcibly sent with her parents, Jean and Philip, into a ghetto in Bukaczowce, Poland (now Ukraine). After using forged identity papers to escape, the young family went into hiding...

Every Tuesday at Meer, one can find the Menches of the Men's Club hard at work. Their tool time has created many projects and, just as important, conversation and laughter.
"It's so nice to see the guys every week," Manny Kalef said. "We take pride in our projects and when we see one of our pieces actually being used and looking good, that feels great." Currently, they are working on staining and sanding a shelf for the Meer library.
Past projects include making the aron kodesh (Torah Ark), the podium, some chairs and benches on the patio, and other bookshelves and benches.

Family Unity on Passover
I was always intrigued why Passover is uniquely celebrated with large groups of people. During this holiday, families convene in large numbers, and many Jews observe some level of Passover in the company of many friends and family.
In the Torah section dealing with the Paschal sacrifice (Exodus, chapter 12), the word Mishpacha (families) is used several times. Individuals were commanded to enlist and join in their family’s feast. Thus, families are seen as a crucial part of the Passover celebration.
I am impressed by the collection of Hagadot (story of the Passover liberation) that many people have. Every year there seems to be newly published Hagadot with thought provoking insights.
The reason for this may be that during Passover, families sit together, share, exchange and recollect insights, memories and ideas, the result of which is a rich reservoir of creative and captivating ethical lessons and profound discoveries. Passover teaches us that the importance of coming together cannot be overestimated. And without the presence of family members, we rely on our friends.
