RULES FOR AGING

By Jo Strausz Rosen

The writer Roger Rosenblatt, editor-at-large of Time, Inc., winner of two George Polk Awards, a Peabody, an Emmy, and the Robert F. Kennedy Book Prize, penned a book of Rules for Aging, suggesting to us that we should resist our normal impulses to live longer and attain perfection in ourselves or others. Here are a few of his rules:

It doesn’t matter. “Whatever you think matters, doesn’t.”

“Follow this rule and it will add decades to your life. It doesn’t matter if you are late, or early; if you are here, or there; if you said it, or did not say it; if you were clever, or if you were stupid; if you are having a bad hair day, or a no hair day; It doesn’t matter."

Nobody is thinking about you.

“I promise you; nobody is thinking about you. They are thinking about themselves – just like you."

We’ve experienced a great deal of sadness and pain for a variety of reasons. We can sit with the anger and sadness and let it hold us back…or we can train our brains to begin focusing on things we like about our lives. We can use the pain and sorrow to push ourselves forward taking action for good. Report back on what happens to our lives when we do this. Let’s share the good news stories to inspire each other.

GETTING TO

KNOW YOU

“Getting to know you, getting to know all about you.

Getting to like you, getting to hope you like me.

Getting to know you, putting it my way,

But nicely, you are precisely, my cup of tea….”

-"The King and I"

This was the song in our heads as we witnessed the meetings of the eight Frankel Jewish Academy students and the Eight Over Eighty honorees. It was love at first sight… and the more they got to know each other, the stronger their bonds became. We have heard from several of the honorees after attending the “Getting to Know You” Luncheon at Meer Apartments this past Monday. Plans were made for getting together again and staying in touch via phone calls and emails with their student partners long after the Gala Luncheon will take place this May 21. Brett Mountain snapped some great candid shots of the day as Scott Wasserman videotaped snippets of all these amazing people. The staff at JSL are so excited to plan the event with the capable co-chairs and committee members to share this special 30th anniversary of Eight Over Eighty with our community.

Lives and Letters

The dream of many is to live in the present. Often people struggle with living in the past or speculating the future and do not give adequate attention to the present.

The sacred Torah scroll contains holy letters and words. It offers us profound insight on living in the present. Each one of the hundreds of thousands of letters requires its own space and shape. If a single letter is questionable as to whether it looks as it should, Jewish law offers unique resolution.

A six-year-old child is brought close to the Torah. He is asked to decipher the questionable letter in the Torah scroll. However, before he is shown the letter, the adult Torah reader blocks out the letters on either side. This way the child can deal with “the present letter” without being confused or overwhelmed by comparisons to the letters on either side.

It is this life lesson I wish to share. In our lives we would be wise to view each day, each scene, and each encounter independently of the others before and after it.

Yes, we experienced yesterday, and we will, please G-d, see tomorrow, but the now is truly ours to to experience and to cherish. Blocking out (or lessening) awareness of other memories, other concerns or disappointments will allow us to view each letter, each moment, and each day of our lives as one independent from all others. Our living story of life is likened to a sacred Torah scroll which deserves to be lived with more ease and less stress.

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
