SHABBAT SHALOM
Rabbi Dovid S. Polter, Community Chaplain
Time for Time
Time is precious and it often far exceeds the value of money.
When you give time, you sacrifice your personal needs, your plans and the structure of your day. When you give of your time, you are giving of yourself.
An eighty-year-old resident, a retired physician once shared with me a moving story. When he was twenty-one years old training as a resident physician, he escorted the main physician into the rooms of his patients. Back then in the 70's, if a physician ever peaked at his watch during his meeting with his patient, it implied that things don't look good for the patient and the family must be informed soon.
At one particular meeting, the resident doctor realized the physician peaked at his watch and the fear was rather evident on his patient’s face.
Realizing the pain and discomfort felt on the face of the poor patient, prompted the resident physician to make a vow never to wear a watch. He kept his vow until his 50th wedding anniversary when his wife gifted him with a watch. When we wish to make a sincere and effective visit with someone we know, let us resolve to set aside our agendas and keep our watch concealed.
