PREPARING FOR THE HOLIDAY

By Jo Strausz Rosen

In preparation for the New Year, 5783, I wish to reaffirm the belief in my own power, with gratitude to The One for keeping me going. How many of us are struggling to simply get up and get dressed in the morning and find ourselves lingering in loneliness on the sidelines?

How many of us are saying “No, I can’t” to an invitation, after committing to the “Yes I will?”

How many are falling back on old habits and giving in to insecurities and fears? Let’s take this time to make a fresh start.

WHY I LOVE THIS PLACE

By Beth Robinson

It was a busy day. They’re all busy at JSL, which is good – it’s how I like it - I like a lot of activity. Anyway, I had one thing after another on my calendar that day and at two o’clock I was due to visit the creative writing group. I was going to introduce myself as the new Director of Friends of Jewish Senior life and pitch a couple of projects I was hoping they’d find interesting. And then I was going to scoot – I had a bunch of other stuff to do.

THIS WEEK AT JSL

It’s Fall Prevention Awareness Week on the campuses of JSL. Members of Fleischman Residence enjoyed a game of Jeopardy with Life Enrichment Coordinator, Daniel Kline. The residents were divided into two teams and had to decide what the questions were to the answers on the board, in Jeopardy format. Categories included Statistics, Risk Factors, In the Home, Medication and Illness, and Fall Prevention.

“When a person takes 4 or more of these, they are more likely to fall.” – The answer is, Medication.

Daniella HarPaz Mechnikov, Executive Director of Yad Ezra, hosted a wonderful visit with Meer residents this week. The residents, and the JSL bus driver toured the facility and learned about their system and some of the new operations. They visited the Yad Ezra greenhouse and saw their offsite Genesis Garden in Berkley. The group of Meer volunteers then sorted seeds for the client gardening program. Daniella reported that it was a huge help to do this.

Special thank you (from left to right) to Bob, Toby Chudnow, Lorraine Sallan, Bernie Jonas, Edith Maniker, Eleanor Smith and Sybil Glaser.

Residents Rosa Mandelbaum and Anita Cywiak enjoying the monthly Meer Newsletter, put together by Life Enrichment Coordinator Myriam Cohen and contributing residents.

Hats Off

In 1989 a young prospective couple chose to spend their first date at Windows of the World atop the north tower of the twin towers. Upon their ascent, they were greeted at the elevator by the concierge. “Sir, you will need to remove your hat and place it in the coat room while you ascend to the Windows of the World.” The young man replied, “Will do.”

The prospective couple enjoyed their date on the 101st floor while gazing downward at the beautiful world below.

Upon their descent, the young man’s hat was returned to him.

Fast forward to September 11, 2001, as we remember the horrific tragedy of the twin towers. Amidst global turmoil, thousands of innocent lives were strewn and burned. This couple, now married for twelve years, felt fortunate and reminisced how grateful they were for their safe experience in the North Tower. “Hats off”, the words of the concierge should mean so much more to us now. We, are the survivors who remove our hats in honor of those who gave their lives for freedom and peace.”

Now in 2022, this young couple, my wife and I will never forget the “Hats off” reminder to salute those lives that were sacrificed for our peace. May their memories forever shine in the hearts of those who knew them.
