Coville residents Natalie and Marvin with their decorated Purim masks!
|
Thursday, all the campuses of Jewish Senior Life experienced one of the most joyous holidays on the Jewish calendar. Purim collided with St. Patrick’s Day – a unique and unifying experience for all. We exercised, listened to music, and danced together, dressed in ridiculous costumes. We paraded down the hallways, then came together in meeting spaces for contests, bridge, and bingo… all while snacking on the gifts of Mishloach Manot. The fruit-filled hamantaschen brought pleasure to all before and after the reading of The Book of Esther, aka the Megillah. We documented the joy snapping photos, making videos and sharing heartfelt energy.

When we interviewed Dr. Joseph Jacobson for our Eight Over Eighty video, we learned of his extensive volunteer involvement in the community that included sitting on the boards of many important agencies. Sinai Hospital, Jewish Federation, Weitzmann Institute, JVS, JARC, and Juvenile Diabetes, just to name a few. A graduate of Yeshiva Beth Yehuda, he became an orthodontist, achieving the level Diplomat of American Association of Orthodontists. Passionate about helping people in this way to smile confidently, Joe wishes he could continue to volunteer his services in this capacity down in Sarasota where he and Nancy reside half of the year.
Joe is extremely proud of his wife, their sons, Howard and David and their wives, but the twinkle in his eye is for his seven granddaughters and one grandson, and he thanks Gd for all of them. He feels he tried his best to be a good person and to be able to do some things that made a difference in the world for others. We think he is a very special honoree and JSL appreciates our entire class of Eight Over Eighty Tikkun Olam award winners this year.

Persian Walnut Cookies
Ingredients
1 1/2 cups finely ground walnuts
3 egg yolks
3/4 cup white sugar
1 tablespoon ground cardamom
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 tablespoon rose water
1 egg yolk
1 teaspoon water
1/2 cup walnut pieces for decoration
Directions
1) Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
2) In a medium bowl, mix together the ground walnuts, 3 egg yolks, sugar, cardamom, baking soda and rose water until well blended. Roll teaspoon sized pieces of dough into balls and place onto parchment-lined baking sheets. Cookies should be spaced 2 inches apart. Whisk together the remaining egg yolk and water using a fork. Press a walnut piece into each cookie, then brush with the egg yolk glaze.
3)Bake for 20 minutes in the preheated oven, or until golden. The cookies will appear soft and undercooked but take heart, they will harden considerably when cooled. Allow them to cool on the baking sheets for at least 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Rabbi Dovid S. Polter, Community Chaplain
Good Will; At Will
From the dictionary, "Good will” is defined as friendly; disposition; benevolence; kindness.
“At will" means at whatever time or in whatever way one pleases
It can be molded and shaped at will.
The best approach to life today is to practice "Good will" "At will".
One need not search for reasons to perform acts of goodness and kindness. Consider being kind at any given time.
One way to practice kindness is to consider the following:
We have worn masks for close to two years. Our two ears were deliberately free from being covered by masks so that we can freely listen to someone else.
Thus, we have been granted one mouth and two ears to listen more than we speak.
