WHEN WE JUST CLICK: THE MAGIC OF CONNECTION

by Jo Strausz Rosen

Have you ever met someone and immediately felt like you’d known them forever? That kind of connection is rare and meaningful. And especially when you’re navigating a new place or phase in life, it feels like pure magic.

It might’ve happened at a neighborhood meet and greet, or during the first day as the new member of a board, or as a new member of a senior living community! You didn’t expect anything extraordinary. And yet, something clicked. You started talking to someone you hadn’t met before, and in no time, you laughed, exchanging stories, and suddenly, what felt unfamiliar just a moment ago began to feel like home.

Starting fresh, whether you’re newly divorced, or moving to a new city, joining a new group, or stepping into a new volunteer role, can be both exciting and disorienting. You leave behind the familiar: your local haunts, your regular conversations, your comfort zone. And in those early days, even small things, like not knowing where to get your coffee or who to call when your dishwasher breaks, can amplify the sense of being unmoored.

FRIENDS OF JSL

Join us on June 29 for Painting Fun!

Hechtman Activities Room – 1:00pm

Sunday’s the day! Join us at Hechtman to create a one-of-a-kind painting to commemorate a hundred years of volunteers at JSL and honor all the volunteers who make life wonderful here. Come nosh and shmooze and dab some paint – we’re planning to have a blast. Everyone is welcome. No painting experience needed at all – we’ll be painting in an outline by artist Daniel Cascardo. Just make sure to wear something you don’t mind getting a little paint on should it come to that.

Additional painting dates are:

Fleischman - August 24

Prentis / Coville - September 7

Teitel - September 14

Meer - Oct 12

All sessions start at 1:00pm.

Be Part of the Magic!

This year’s JSL Lives Well Lived will serve as the wrap up to our Hundred Years of Volunteers celebration. The theme is The Magic of Volunteers, and we will mark the occasion with magic and an opportunity to honor our volunteers and volunteer leadership on Sunday, November 23 at 2:00pm.

Help Make Life Lovely at JSL!

The last letter added to the English alphabet was 'J.' The letter dates back to 1524, and before that the letter 'i' was used for both the 'i' and 'j' sounds.

SHABBAT SHALOM

Rabbi Dovid S. Polter, Community Chaplain

Innocent In-A-Cent

There's discussion about discontinuing the production of pennies, but doing so might cause us to overlook their deeper significance. Pennies serve as a reminder of the concept of oneness, symbolizing the unity and singularity of a higher power. Our sages teach us that when handling charitable funds, one should count coins individually, emphasizing the importance of treating each unit with care and respect. This approach highlights the sacred nature of charity and the value of every single contribution. Pennies might seem insignificant, but they play a crucial role in reminding us of the oneness that underlies our lives, bringing a sense of peace and unity to our daily experiences.

A remarkable rabbi's actions exemplify the value of treating every act of charity with care and attention. This rabbi would stand for hours, distributing crisp dollar bills to people for them to donate to charity. When asked how he managed to stand for so long well into his eighties, he replied that when you're handling something as precious as diamonds, you never get tired. For him, each passing individual was like a diamond, precious and valuable in the eyes of the giver and the receiver. This mindset highlights the significance of approaching charitable acts with dedication and enthusiasm, finding meaning and purpose in every gesture of kindness.

L’Chaim!

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
