RITUALS
By Jo Strausz Rosen
What are the rituals we create to commemorate the important milestones in our lives?

Birthdays, Bris and naming ceremonies, engagements, weddings, funerals… the first days of anything… Photographs capture these moments in time we want to remember always. When we think of graduation, we walk up on stage, collect our diplomas, shake hands with our professors and return to our seats, filled with pride, newly matriculated and ready to take on the world, hoping we will unlock new doors and begin new paths. Psychologist, Dr. Betsy Stone said, “Graduation is celebratory, but also an unmooring ritual - a mourning ritual.” In all the celebratory moments, we face our fears about what comes next. We don’t always know.
MEER ART CLASS
Former art teacher and current Meer resident, Anita, taught a painting class to residents in the recently renovated Art Room at Meer, thanks to a generous grant from the Jewish Women’s Foundation. These beautiful creations will be used as Matzah covers during the upcoming holiday of Passover.
EIGHT OVER EIGHTY
Rene Lichtman, 84, spent a portion of his early childhood, hidden by a French family during the war. This traumatic beginning has influenced his entire life. His leadership in the international group of Hidden Children is important and continues to help so many others who have had these experiences. The well-known group CHAIM has been written about and there are conferences all over the world in which he participates.

After his birth mother returned for him, she moved them to New York City. Rene studied painting at the Cooper Union Art School and finds the process very therapeutic. The solitary experience is something he still craves and finds calming and in his art filled apartment where he displays many of his works. He received a Fullbright Scholarship and painted with Robert Motherwell and Helen Frankenthaler prior to his experiences in the Civil Rights Movement which led him to come to Detroit where he produced a film on race relations and the autoworkers unions. The film, “Finally Got the News” is used in labor studies. Later he went to Wayne State University at night on the GI Bill and got an advanced degree in Instructional Technology using his media skills and computers as educational tools.

Passover Liberation

The festival of Passover celebrates liberty and freedom in our lives. We remember the Exodus of the Israelites from Egypt as our own lives are fraught with feelings of enslavement to all that surround us.

One symbol and landmark of freedom is the Statue of Liberty. In this structure, as you walk up the spiral staircase, there is no opportunity to sit and rest along the way. The continuous rise inspires and particularly enlightens us about freedom and liberty during the annual Passover festival.

Every year we repeat the customs, the rituals, the melodies and the matzo. Does it not lose its taste?

The spiral staircase brings us to the same spot each time around, yet we find ourselves one level higher and hopefully one level wiser. By nature, life and Judaism are repetitive. We can add the supernatural touch by infusing sacred repetition each year. Each time around, we are endowed with the opportunity to learn more and grow more.

Treat yourself this Passover. Learn something new, examine your roots, allow freedom and individual choice to lead your life.
