LIVE AND LEARN

by Jo Strausz Rosen

Jewish Senior Life of Metropolitan Detroit is known for signature programming spanning a range of interests, and we will ensure that it remains the most exciting and compelling senior living option for our current residents. Towards this end, JSL has developed an exciting pilot for the Meer Apartments independent living community in West Bloomfield that will be the area’s first of its kind: a vibrant Live and Learn model designed to foster social connection and wellness, spark intellectual stimulation, and discourse, and enrich the lives of all residents.

FRIENDS

From our Dor L’ Dor partnership with Hillel Hebrew Day School, to 8 Over 80, to the many volunteer opportunities in all of our buildings, our community’s young people bring vibrant life to JSL. Many of them are graduating and moving on to college. We want to congratulate them and give them our thanks for their time, efforts and empathy, our best wishes for a wonderful future, and an invitation to come back any time!

If you or a young person you know are looking for someplace rewarding and fun to volunteer, give me a call!

Amy Cuddy, a psychologist at Harvard Business School, believes that everyone should spend two minutes per day power posing to boost their mood and confidence levels. It’s based on the theory that how we hold our body influences how we feel and behave.

So, what exactly is power posing?

Power posing is a technique in which people adopt poses that are associated with achievement, confidence, and power. Think Wonder Woman, who famously stands with her chest out, legs shoulder-width apart, and hands on her hips.

What Makes Us a People

A senior resident I once knew, Mr. Z. L., was a staunch Zionist and authored the English translation of the Mendel Beilis Trial.

Once when attending my program prior to the holiday of Shavuot, I shared that Shavuot marks the Jewish people’s becoming a nation as they stood united at the foot of Mount Sinai. Mr. Z interjected and quoted the Biblical story where Moses did away with an Egyptian who was physically hurting a Jew. Mr. Z claimed that it was at this point when the Jewish people became a nation.

I found this to be a unique insight although at first, I did not fully understand it. But I’ve learned that behind the wise words of seniors lie wisdom.

When probing further on his word, I discovered the depth and truth of his message. When one Jew puts his life on the line for another as Moses did, this very selfless act constitutes what it means to be a unified people.

Let us care for one another and forever maintain our unity.

L’Chaim!

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
