THE VILLAGE EFFECT

A few years ago, I was fortunate to meet the fabulous Brené Brown, PhD, MSW at a convention. She told me, “Connection is the reason we are here. “She went on to demonstrate in personal stories that nothing lasts forever, but this is the reason we must cherish each moment we have together.

I think we can all agree that one of the best cures for feelings of anxiety is getting out of the house, meeting people, and doing things for yourself and for others. Simple conversations with strangers are reminders that we are all going through life together - this commonality bonds us to each other and often brings comfort and joy.

Author, Matthew J. Hall wrote, “The Human Condition is a Terminal Illness.” He maintains and teaches that if we can share our own unique experiences and our feelings, good or bad, with friends and loved ones, we are all better off."

JSL OAK PARK HAPPENINGS

BUILDING COMMUNITY SIDE BY SIDE, SLICE BY SLICE

At Prentis Apartments in Oak Park, JSL, Reboot, Repair the World, and Moishe House recruited volunteers to make Sunbutter and jelly sandwiches that were donated to stock Detroit Community Fridges (there are five across Detroit that are open all year). Approximately 40 people between resident volunteers and younger adults - ages 15 to 28 - attended, and also worked on a digital cookbook. Sunbutter is an allergen free peanut butter alternative made from the seeds of sunflowers. So proud of our Prentis residents!

BRUNCHING WITH THE BEST - MOMS

Teitel Apartments, located on the A. Alfred Taubman Jewish Community Campus in Oak Park, celebrated Mother’s Day last weekend with the residents from Prentis and Coville too. Everyone enjoyed delicious food, great conversation and cultivating camaraderie.

SHABBAT SHALOM

Rabbi Dovid S. Polter, Community Chaplain

Wisdom - the Foundation of Life

The Jerusalem translation of the first word of the Torah (Bible) “Bereshit” (in the beginning) is “Bechuchma” (with wisdom). This teaches us that the foundation of every created being is divine wisdom.

Yet, human wisdom is a gift which can only be attained through the passage of time. The older you are, the more life experiences you have, the wiser you become.

You, our cherished seniors, are the ones who can best relate to wisdom. You have seen, lived, and observed all aspects of life. You have allowed time to endow you with the natural gift of wisdom. Time breeds wisdom. The world looks to you for wisdom that can be acquired in no other way than through the natural passage of time.

L’Chaim!

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
