COUNT YOUR CHICKENS

By Jo Strausz Rosen

One of my favorite stories is about Sarah, an aging, newly widowed mother, reflecting on her past with her daughter Rachel. Rachel came upon her mother napping with a smile on her face. After Sarah awakened, Rachel asked her what she had been dreaming about.

Sarah told Rachel: “I was counting my chickens.” When Sarah asked her mother why she was dreaming of chickens, Sarah explained: “It occurred to me that I had eaten chicken once or twice a week for so many years. I figured two chickens a week, times 52 weeks, times my age, 84 years, turns out to be 8,736 chickens."

#GIVING TUESDAY:

Generations of Generosity

#Giving Tuesday falls on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.

Traditionally, Thanksgiving began as a day of giving thanks and sacrifice for the blessing of the harvest and of the preceding year.

As Jews, we regularly repeat blessings of gratitude to Gd for the bounty and blessings we receive. We often express our gratitude through giving tzedakah - Hebrew for justice, righteousness, charity. A tzadik, a righteous person gives tzedakah.

Rent alone does not provide everything necessary to live a complete life. At Jewish Senior Life we are grateful to generations of generosity for contributing tzedakah to fund the services and special programs that are so vital to our older adults’ quality of life.

#GivingTuesday is a reminder and an opportunity to support the charities of your choice. We hope you will celebrate the season with a gift of tzedakah to Jewish Senior Life of Metropolitan Detroit.

HEART HEALTHY FOODS FOR SENIORS

Here at Jewish Senior Life, our dining menus are carefully created by each kitchen’s head chef, with nutritional adequacy in mind. They are especially equipped for this task, as they recognize the needs of each building and understand what the residents enjoy.

"JSL chefs take great care to provide balanced meals to our residents by providing many delicious options from each food group to choose from," JSL Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Lisa McCauley said. "From fresh made salads all the way to dessert, there is something for everyone."

Certain residences also offer kitchenettes in their apartments, allowing our residents to keep select foods of their desire in their room for guests or visitors.

A Thought on Thanksgiving

Neurologists from around the world convened to discuss a strange phenomenon of people who faint as soon as they get out of bed in the morning.

One of the speakers was Professor Linda McMaron from Great Britain. After years of observations and study, she concluded that the fainting phenomenon was the result of an overly quick transition between the prone and standing positions.

She explained that the blood in the body requires twelve seconds to flow from the feet to the brain. However, when a person rises too fast (under 12 seconds) then the blood finds itself “projected” too fast from the feet, causing a loss of consciousness. She recommended that every person waking up in the morning should sit up on their bed and slowly count till twelve, in order to prevent any feeling of weakness, dizziness or fainting. Her lecture was welcomed with a very enthusiastic reaction and applause from the attendees.

Someone present commented: Ironically, we Jews follow an old tradition to recite a prayer every morning in tribute to the creator of the world, thanking Him for granting us the privilege of waking up whole and healthy. This prayer is recited immediately upon opening our eyes, while sitting on our bed.

This prayer is indeed composed of twelve words (in Hebrew), and if we recite it slowly, with fervor, it takes exactly twelve second to say it..... twelve words in twelve seconds!

“I offer thanks to You, living and eternal King, for You have mercifully restored my soul within me; Your faithfulness is great.”

The crowd again stood up and clapped vigorously but this time in honor and in gratitude to the Creator of the world.

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
