POWER OF PURPOSE

By Jo Strausz Rosen

Arlene Frank recently published a poem with a story in Nu?-Detroit. They speak to the power of purpose, and I am reminded of our residents and the Eight Over 80 honorees. And we remember our ancestors and their dedication to Tikkun Olam throughout their years of life.

Inspired by Arlene’s memories, we offer a glimpse into one of our 8 over 80 honorees, Roz Garber. Mentored by a devoted teacher who taught her to never give up, and raised by a mother whose tough love molded her into the confident, strong woman she is, Roz teaches us what makes a life, the value of Judaism and when one door closes.

JSL JUNE HAPPENINGS

THE POWER OF PLANNING

JSL life enrichment coordinators met with development, marketing and communications staff to plan programs and activities, share resources and resident stories. The group works together to improve the lives of residents with purposeful programming and lively events. We look forward to the always fabulous Senior Dream Cruise in Oak Park this year on August 11.

DINE + DISCOVER

A lunch and learn was hosted by JSL at The Meer Apartments for those in the community interested in planning a move to a senior retirement community. The Dine + Discover featured Tandem Senior Living Advisors, Will Kieffer and Robin Hepler who provided an informative presentation with tips for moving. They dispelled the five most common myths and shared their own family experiences in senior living communities around the country. A helpful FAQ handout was in everyone's packet so that the 25 guests in attendance learned that making decisions to move while we still can is essential for continued independence. We should plan our retirement while we can still enjoy the many benefits.

CANVAS CRAFT CORNER

Hechtman Apartments residents in West Bloomfield are getting crafty yet again! During the bi-monthly "Sarah's Craft Corner," participants designed and painted canvas tote bags. "The bags are really practical and fun, and the activity allows the residents to be so creative," said Sarah Pappas, LLMSW, Resident Service Coordinator.

BOUTIQUE

Something Fun for The Dads in Your Life

Whether Dad is a dog lover, a tool aficionado, a photographer, a golfer, a car nut, a wearer of silly socks or any other variety of father, you can find something perfect at the JSL boutiques.

Bagel, Schmears and Coffee

Starting Sunday, June 25, Meer will restart its pre-pandemic ritual of a monthly bagel and coffee sale. Come out and volunteer, schmear and shmooze. Call / email Beth at 248 569-5062 / brobinson@jslmi.org to sign up!

The Imperfect Perfect

The following is a snippet of wisdom shared at one of JSL’s recent senior sessions.

G-d, who is perfect, purposely created an imperfect world and entrusted it to us, His mortal and imperfect people, so that we, the imperfect, can perfect the imperfect world. This creates a full circle of Divine service.

How and why is it that precisely those who are imperfect are charged to perfect the world?

One small example is the bee. Bees are not a kosher species, yet they produce honey which is kosher. How and why? And from our sages, we learn that the skill of the child can be greater than that of his/her parent. We don’t always understand but we believe.

We, G-d’s people, possess a potential so great and dormant that even we cannot access it all for our own growth. Yet, for the sake of another, we can tap into it, share it and perfect an entity outside of ourselves.

Let us each do our share to perfect our world - even in the most minute way.

Never discount or make light of anything positive you do. Know that it is and will be everlasting.

L’Chaim!

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
