As election day (November 5th) approaches, JSL has taken an active role in assisting and educating residents about their rights as voters. Recently, West Bloomfield Clerk Debbie Binder visited Meer and Hechtman Apartments and today she visited Fleischman Residence to update everyone on the voting process and the state of our democracy. Clerk Binder is always thinking of ways she can provide better and/or additional services to enhance participation by JSL residents.
Debbie also represents the League of Women Voters (LWV), a non-partisan organization dedicated to promoting and protecting our democracy at the national, state and local levels. The LWV actively promotes voter participation and advocates against restrictive measures that undermine voting rights.

From safeandjustmi.org:
Formerly incarcerated people in Michigan retain their right to vote. As we head into election season, it’s important to take a moment to review your voting rights and to understand what Michigan law says about your or your friend or family member’s ability to cast a vote in state, local and federal elections.
In a number of states, people with a felony record are not eligible to vote. That is not the case in Michigan: incarcerated people are not eligible to vote only while incarcerated; this prohibition does not extend past release, even if a person is on probation or parole.

How did it get to be fall so fast (I ask myself every year)?! There are brilliant yellow, orange and red leaves popping up, and it’s time to buy sweaters. You may think you have enough sweaters (which is theoretically possible, I grant), but if you actually do, wouldn’t you like an accessory or two to give them new life? While you’re thinking about that, let me invite you to consider it during one of our fabulously fun fall fashion shows. Come out and see our resident models strut their stuff – and if you think older gals don’t strut, you really need to see this! Join us for a snack, a laugh, and first shot at shopping the boutique’s fall line on:
*Tuesday, September 24 at 1:00pm in the Meer Residence Dining Room
*Friday, September 27 at 1:00pm in the Fleischman Residence Lobby
| But that’s not all the fun we’re planning for fall. | |
This year’s Lives Well Lived: Still Laughing After All These Years will feature comedian Al Lubel. The veteran of many appearances on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and Jay Leno and the late Show with David Letterman, Al Lubel has that very funny, neurotic Jewish only child of a Jewish mother thing down pat. I only recommend this for people who like to laugh and support JSL at the same time (for those who don’t like to laugh, please come buy a sweater and support that way).
Visit https://jslmi.org/events/jsls-lives-well-lived/ to become a sponsor and/or buy tickets.
Fall is fun (have you yet noticed my affinity for alliteration?), but we have a great time year-round at Jewish Senior Life. And an important part of the merriment is our volunteers. Our volunteers not only help us expand our ability to deliver outstanding experiences for our residents, but they also enhance their connection to the larger community, increasing social opportunities and reducing isolation. In short, they make life better for everyone who lives at JSL. We’d love to have you be a part of this very special group.
There are so many opportunities, all listed on https://jslmi.org/volunteer/.
A few urgent needs are:
- Krohlik Café in the Meer Residence
- Visitors at Coville in Oak Park
- Sharon's Boutique in the Fleischman Residence
Feel free to call me with any questions or to volunteer!

From the blog of author and age-activist Ashton Applewhite:
What happens when 40 anti-ageism advocates get together? A lot! As some of you know, I co-created an anti-ageism website called Old School. Three weeks ago we hosted a gathering called Summer School at Concordia University, in downtown Montréal. Forty people—designers, educators, organizers, troublemakers—traveled across North America and from as far away as Portugal. We came together to envision a world without ageism and filled the space with ideas and actions—and a lot of post-its.

On September 19, a few Meer Apartment residents enjoyed a glorious morning at Franklin Cider Mill as they snacked on goodies and laughed together at our local historic gathering spot.
"Relaxing here with my fellow residents, breathing in the amazing smells, and remembering my children and I who used to come here for many years. It's a great day," Meer resident June Rubenstein said.

Train Ride Through the Holidays
Imagine the Jewish calendar year as an exhilarating train ride through time. Each holiday becomes a vibrant station, bustling with its own unique market. As we step off at each stop, we're greeted by a colorful array of spiritual treasures, available only at that moment. We gather these treasures eagerly, filling our bags with the distinct blessings and energies of each festival. Then, it's back on the train, our hearts fuller as we journey to the next destination. But the adventure doesn’t end when the ride is over. The true magic lies in unpacking these spiritual souvenirs when we return home. It's about taking the essence of each festival, those precious gifts, and weaving them into the fabric of our daily lives. By doing so, we transform ourselves into vessels of Divine energy, helping to carry these blessings forward into the future.

L’Chaim!
More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
