SARA BERMAN’S CLOSET

By Jo Strausz Rosen

On a recent escape to Sarasota, I visited the Sarasota Museum of Art and took time to experience the creative exhibits. One that touched me deeply is a traveling exhibit by author and artist, Maira Kalman and curated by her son Alex Kalman who documented their mother’s (grandmother’s) life story from her journey to America from Belarus. In this touching and loving homage to the unbreakable family matriarch, we learn about Sara’s life and can think about what makes a life worthwhile and what is the importance of documenting family history, no matter how hard the story is.

JSL HAPPENINGS

LITTLE BARKS IN

OAK PARK

Once per month, the Guiding Eye dog breeder visits Coville Apartments residents in Oak Park. This past week, residents enjoyed seven-week old Jesse.

BOOK CLUB & CONVO

Monthly meetings with West Bloomfield Township Public Library Community Engagement Librarian, Emily Tobin, MLIS, brings the bookworms together at Hechtman and Meer. Ms. Tobin brings a collection of different genres of books for the residents, always paying attention to their wordy wishes and wants.

"I look forward to my monthly visits with the residents and bringing them books," Tobin said. "I consider myself lucky to get to know each of them and what they like to read and to bring what interests them."

Recently, Tobin started a book club at Hechtman and Meer as well and assists residents with any technology issues, such as loading e-books on a device or setting up an account through the library to do so.

Books offer everyone the opportunity to travel without leaving the comfort of our armchairs. “I find television very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go into the other room and read a book.” -Groucho Marx

8 Over 80 Spotlight: Phyllis Lewkowicz

Hechtman resident and Tikkun Olam Award honoree, Phyllis Lewkowicz is a beloved member of the JSL community. A former Livonia resident, Phyllis thrives at Hechtman Apartments where she is an active volunteer. Although she is visually impaired, she creatively uses a specially enhanced computer to design and sell tribute and greeting cards to fellow residents. The proceeds from these tributes go to the Hechtman Resident Council flower fund to ensure Shabbos flowers adorn the tables at JSL. From her greeting card sales, Phyllis also donates to the West Bloomfield Police and Fire Departments, in appreciation of their dedicated service on the JSL campus.

FRIDAY FUNNY

SHABBAT SHALOM

Be a Winner Without Winning

On a recent visit to a Chassidic art gallery, I became inspired when I found a painting of two scholars bent over a chess board. The artist shared and I observed that he creatively placed the chess pieces on the canvas in a way that neither side could win or lose. Life today is often overwhelming, forcing people to feel they must win to succeed. So what is the lesson we can learn?

The healthiest way to live is not to focus on winning nor to fear losing. The lesson is to live our lives, perform good deeds undistracted without the challenge of outside expectations. Each of us is uniquely created with skills that we can use to achieve goals, and when we strive to utilize our skills, we can be our best.

We grow at our own pace. When we develop and harness personal talents and interests, we learn that life is not a game of winning and losing. Rather it is an opportunity to be our best, to feed our souls and pursue peace in the world around us.

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
