I was on the phone catching up with my daughter Lindsey recently and in the middle of a story I was sharing with her, I couldn’t remember what I was about to say next and instead chirped, “I’m having a senior moment…” She quickly reminded me that senior moments don’t have to be negative. By golly, she’s right!
Senior moments can be when we’re engaged in joyful conversation with our kids, or at full throttle on the floor chasing our grandkids or sitting across from an amazing partner to suddenly take the win in canasta. Consider all those senior moments of glee when we find ourselves clicking our rings on the steering wheel or snapping our fingers to a favorite old tune (pick your decade) on the car radio.

There’s nothing more fun than a party and we had a good one yesterday to celebrate our volunteers with a “You Rock” themed brunch. I may be too tired to put it all into words, but it’s a good tired. It’s the tired that comes from doing something utterly worthwhile, as our volunteers do every day. The rest of the JSL staff, however, had no trouble finding their words today. Each person who got up to the microphone shared how deeply meaningful the work of our volunteers is to the community that is JSL in their own heartfelt way.
I’m finding myself feeling a great deal of gratitude for both our amazing corps of over 250 volunteers and for my very special colleagues who planned and decorated and wrote songs and speeches and aggregated lists and made playlists and centerpieces and took photographs and added all the little touches that make an event special – all to show how much we, as JSL, appreciate every precious moment our volunteers spend here.

If you’d like to become part of the warmth, community, and fun of JSL, give me a call – we have so many great volunteer opportunities.

In fact, one is coming up shortly – our Bessie Spector Oldest Jewish Americans Celebration. And believe me, this is one of the most satisfying volunteer gigs there is! Last year we had over 100 honorees ages 95 and up. Volunteers are needed to escort honorees in, do registration, sit at tables with our honorees to help out, put on corsages and boutonnieres, pack goody bags, and so much more. Join us for what will absolutely be one of the highlights of the year.
Okay, I’m out of words and I’m going home to take a nap.
Rock on!

| This gentle stretching workout helps improve flexibility, circulation, and posture, and relieve stress. It can be done any time of day. | The village of Hogeweyk in Weesp, Netherlands is designed to creatively house people with dementia. It’s a nursing home designed to resemble a village with 27 houses, all designed for people’s various interests. People can choose from nature-oriented, cosmopolitan, fancy, or traditional Dutch. Each house hosts six or seven residents with a caregiver who cooks, cares for each and even goes with them to social events or helps them run errands like shopping at the village market. This special place was designed to give residents a greater quality of life and has become an inspiration for others who want to refine dementia care. | | |

JSL hosted The Peacock Room pop-up shop, both at Meer and Fleischman, this week. Owner Rachel Lutz brought a selection of women's apparel, accessories, stationery and gifts, and interacted with excited, ready-to-shop residents.
The Peacock Room has two main Detroit locations: The Fisher Building and The Park Shelton, with finds inspired by the 1920s-1960s eras.

Thank You to Trader Joe's
For years I have enjoyed wonderful shopping experiences at Trader Joe’s. The environment is one of warmth, pleasantness, and joy. Their customer service is exemplary, and their friendly staff provide shoppers with joy, and customers leave the stores feeling uplifted.
Today, I wish to recognize Trader Joe’s for their gracious act of donating exquisite flowers weekly for our JSL residents. Each Friday upon conclusion of our Shabbat programs, residents get to choose bouquets of flowers and leave the room grateful and humming a happy tune. I’m told that these flowers often remain fresh for many days in the residential apartments following this weekly activity.
I wish to publicly thank Trader Joe’s for sharing the Mitzvah of providing joy and serenity to JSL seniors.
Trader Joe’s remains a vital neighbor our community can continue to support and value.

L’Chaim!
More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
