Richard Alpert aka Ram Dass, born in 1931, was a beloved spiritual author and teacher who pioneered the integration of Eastern philosophies into the fabric of America. Ram Dass recounted that when he visited a friend in a remote Himalayan village many years ago, his friend said to him, “You’re looking so old. You’re so gray.” At first Ram Dass reacted to these statements with a Westerner’s typical horror. But in India, he became enlightened, and he realized that being old was an achievement that entitles one to respect and recognition. He came to see that his friend was congratulating him on becoming an elder. He was saying, “How wonderful that you’ve achieved old age.”
In India, men and women look forward to old age as a time to detach from the obligations of work and family life to seek knowledge of the inner self.

BEING BOLD WITH BEADS
Twice per month at Hechtman Apartments, residents sign up for Beading Class, led by Art Therapist Carol Cranston. The residents listen to music, choose their beads, and socialize. Barbara Williams, a two-year Hechtman resident, said "I love beading in the classroom, it’s so relaxing. Everyone is so kind and Carol is very helpful.” Focusing on cognitive, physical, social and emotional needs, Cranston said “the class keeps the residents sharp, and emotionally and socially, it's a great morale boost. They love to show off what they created and it makes them feel accomplished."

GIVING THE GIFT OF TECH TIME
Every month at Meer, residents have the opportunity to ask some techie questions with the help of Frankel Jewish Academy Sophomore Eli Rosenzweig, 15. Whether it's phones, computers or tablets, Rosenzweig is there to help.
"It feels good to help others. It is nice knowing I can teach these people something they may not know otherwise, or simply just to help them figure things out," he said.
| ARTICLE: TRAVELING SOLO AT 82 | Three weeks alone in a French medieval farmhouse was a time of exploration for Sandra Butler. This excerpt from "The Kitchen is Closed: And Other Benefits of Being Old" addresses both the inevitable limitations that aging brings as well as her delight in the freedom that oldness confers, at least the freedom not to care about so many of the things that once seemed so important. | Senior fitness that is fun! Think About It
Tues. January. 24th marks my father’s 18th anniversary of passing. I feel that much of the color and personality that I try to convey in my writings, I credit to my father’s character and unusual approach to life. He captured the hearts of many with a keen insight into man’s strengths and frailties.
A longtime friend and student of my father expressed what he felt was the uniqueness of my father’s character. Most Rabbis deal with black and white issues of life such as the clear-cut permissible or prohibited, kosher or non-kosher. My father, on the other hand, successfully dealt with many of the gray areas of people’s lives. Those are the more uncomfortable and intimidating points of life. My father would enter those areas with his clients or students, examine and then fine tune. They would then together discover a peaceful and effective solution while giving rise to renewed vigor and clarity.
My father documented many of his life experiences that he felt could benefit others. He compiled them in a book and called them, “Think About It.” Now, eighteen years later, I affirm my father’s memory and indeed I, “Thought about it.”
No moment of our life should pass without investing our thoughts.

L’Chaim!
More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
