AGING ONE DAY

AT A TIME

by Jo Strausz Rosen

I picked up Nora Ephron’s book, “I Feel Bad About My Neck and Other Thoughts on Being a Woman.” Her humorous essays elaborate on her strong feelings about aging, body maintenance, menopause, empty nests and life. We can all relate. This juicy quote says it all:

“No one really wants to read anything that says aging sucks. We are a generation that has learned to believe we can do something about almost everything. We are active…hell, we are proactive. We are positive thinkers. We have the power. We will take any suggestion seriously..

Bessie Spector z”l Oldest Jewish Americans Celebration thank you edition:

Wow, last Friday was a blast. Everyone seemed in a party mood, and we celebrated like mad. If 95 or more years of life isn’t something to celebrate, I don’t know what is. We dressed up, we wore silly hats, we ate, we danced (well, I did anyway, with Leonard Herman, some 36 years my senior). Honestly, I don’t remember the last time I had that much fun! See all the pics on our website.

We had more than 300 attendees, including 80 honorees, of whom, a dozen were centenarians! As you can imagine (if you weren’t there to see it), this takes quite a lot of love and effort, so I’d like to thank all the amazing people who made this happen.

First, thank you to the family of Bessie Spector z”l who sponsor this event each year, especially Joan Chernoff-Epstein, who is always focused on making sure the honorees enjoy themselves as much as her grandmother did.

Our chairs Jain Lauter, Joyce Berlin Weingarten, and Julie Zussman (we call them the Js), are an incredible team who help coordinate everything from tracking down potential honorees to directing the army of volunteers who show up to help every year.

We have a dedicated committee who show up and pitch in for whatever is needed, including Sharon Alterman, Joan Chernoff-Epstein, Shelli Dorfman, Carol Weintraub Fogel, Dennis Frank, Peggy Frank, Kathy Halliburton, Sharon Kaplan, Andrea Margolis-Stillman, Geri Margolis, Sandi Matz, Hannah Moss, Brett Panter, Alissa Pianin, Heather Salesin, Abby Segal, Carol Sofen, Nancy Solway. The committee also includes representatives of our partner organizations Debi Banooni/Gesher, Rosa Chessler/The J, and Barb Haddad/Jewish Family Service.

The West Wingies, as my colleagues in the Jewish Senior Life Foundation are known, Jo Rosen, Beth Tryon and Nicole Lupiloff, both serve on the committee and do so incredibly much behind the scenes to make this event happen, plus jumping in at set-up and on the day of the event to make sure everything goes smoothly.

Between the set-up and the event, we had more than 70 volunteers and JSL staff helping honorees in, serving drinks, putting on boutonnieres and corsages, and the hundred and one other tasks that add up to an enjoyable event. They include, in addition to the chairs, committee, and staff, Janet Antin, Carol Blender, Stacy Carroll, Sandy Collins, Sandra Eidelman, Anita Fishman, Jen Freedland, Jenni Galazka, Phyllis Gantman, Barb Giles, Wendy Handler, Ilene Harris, Margery Jablin, Sharon Kaplan, Linda Klein, Shira Lauter Wolberg, Rebecca Lauter, Dottie Levitsky, Bunni Lieberman, Bobbie Malin, Jerry Malin, Marcia Mittleman, Rabbi Polter, Janet Pont, Tracey Proghovnick, Megan Pudick, Wendy Robins, Iris Rosen, Barb Saltsman, Phyllis Schwartz, Marcia Seigerman, Charley Silow, Sue Simon, Carol Sofen, Nancy Solway, Addie Sweet, Eileen Terman, Connie Wolberg, and Marcy Zussman.

We are deeply grateful to Adat Shalom Synagogue for being such a warm and welcoming place to host this event, and particularly to Hazzan Daniel Gross for sharing a wonderful performance of Jewish music (hence, the dancing), Rabbi Aaron Bergman for blessing our honorees, and Michael Wolf for making sure the lights were on and answering a million questions.

Thank you to Nancy Glen, President of Jewish Federation of Detroit Women’s Philanthropy for her heartfelt greetings.

And special thanks to Detroit Parade Company for loaning us all the decorations that made this a really fun event, Brett Panter of Brody’s Custom Clothing, Printing & Provisions for his fun graphic designs, and Gerych’s for helping to make our honorees feel special with their beautiful boutonnieres and corsages.

Next, JSL will be throwing a Family Fall Festival on September 22, 1-4pm. This day of fall fun will take place on both campuses and include fall treats, entertainment, and activities for all ages. We will need so, so many volunteers. To sign up, please fill out the online form, call me at 248 592-5062 or email brobinson@jslmi.org.

WORKOUT OF

THE WEEK

Slow and Steady

This 60-minute chair exercise program for seniors covers gentle range of motion exercises, basic strength exercises, cardio, balance, core work and finishes with stretching.

Around 100,000 thunderstorms happen in the U.S. each year, and most occur during the summer.

Summer brings to mind sunny days and sizzling temperatures. However, thunderstorms occur very frequently during the summer, especially in the afternoons and evenings.

How Stuff Works explains that this is due to the fact that thunderstorms need both moisture and rapidly rising warm air in order to develop. Because of that, it makes sense that there would be more thunderstorms during the warmer summer months, particularly in humid areas such as the southeastern United States.

ICE CREAM

AND PRIDE

According to the Movement Advancement Project, there are an estimated 2.7 million LGBTQ+ adults aged 50 and older in this country, and 1.1 million are 65 and older, a number to grow in the coming years.

At JSL, we strive to build inclusive communities. This month, everyone showed up either as members of the LGBT+ community or as allies and loved ones for a PRIDE Ice Cream Social at Prentis Apartments in Oak Park. The focus was on acceptance, inclusivity and mutual respect.

A CHARM-ING ACTIVITY

As part of the Willy Wonka-themed week at Hechtman Apartments, residents had a creative and social good time making 'Candy' Keychain Bracelets.

WEEKLY RECIPE

Fortified Forty-Five Years Later

Until we are made aware of it, we may not realize the impact of our deeds and that of our mere proper presence.

To illustrate, several years back I called a senior care facility in Fenton, Michigan to ascertain the presence of a single Jewish resident. As the phone call was about to end, the young woman on the other end shared that her father used to own an antique shop in Fenton some forty-five years ago. She recalled that during the summer months, some young Jewish kids perused her dad’s shop. She even remembered the impression it made on her at the time as the children were so well behaved.

It took me a minute to realize that it could easily have been my friends and I who were campers at the overnight Camp Gan Israel in Fenton at that time.

We were simply striving to sanctify G-d’s Name by merely being on our best behavior.

Our positive behavior caused the faith of this non-Jewish young woman to be fortified forty-five years later!

Beyond “doing” good is “being good” and G-d like.

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
