YOM KIPPUR 5783

By Jo Strausz Rosen

Yom Kippur, The Day of Atonement, is considered the most important holiday of the Jewish year. Traditionally, we fast, attend synagogue and practice the rituals of introspection and repentance during worship services. Each year, we live, act, and strive toward our goals and achieve new levels of skills. Reflecting on our own experiences, we can look closely at ourselves, be mindful of what needs tending, be willing to look seriously at our faults, and rededicate ourselves to be better humans. In this vein, everyone should set aside time for self-improvement. A nightly exercise could be to review the day’s progress and declare whether we felt it was a pass or a fail in terms of our goals for ourselves as human beings. If we keep track during the year, perhaps it will be easier to recall the “fails” on Yom Kippur so we can reflect on them and repent them.

MY GREAT GRANDMOTHER

My great-grandmother's birth certificate reads Bluma, a name she so loathed that she changed it to Blanche. But to the three generations spawned in her lifetime, she was adoringly known as Omy. According to family lore, that soubriquet (pronounced Oh, my) was born of my mother's garbled attempt as a toddler to say Oma, the German word for grandma.

30 years ago, Jewish Senior Life’s Eight Over Eighty celebration was established in our community to honor eight remarkable individuals, each 80 years of age or older. The Tikkun Olam Award has been bestowed on people each year for their work in helping to “Repair Our World.”

Save the Date Sunday, May 21, 2023 and join us at Shaarey Zedek for our 30th Annual Celebration!

Proceeds from this yearly event help enhance the quality of life for JSL residents with an emphasis on subsidizing the cost of food for low-income or indigent residents. Everyone benefits from this event by coming together to acknowledge these selfless older adults in our community for their contributions over their lifetime.

Do you know a special older adult who exemplifies Tikkun Olam?

THIS WEEK'S RECIPE

Silan Caramelized Shallot

1 tablespoon oil

6 shallots

3/4 cup syrup

1/2 cup Apple Cider Vinegar

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon pepper

8 chicken thighs on the bone, or a combination of thighs and legs

Directions

1) Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

2) Slice shallots into thin circles. Over medium heat, heat the oil in a frying pan and sauté the shallots for about 15 minutes, stirring every few minutes.

3) Add the silan and allow to cook for another 10 minutes on the stove. Deglaze the pan with the apple cider vinegar, bring to a boil and then lower to a simmer for another 10 minutes.

4) Place the chicken in a 9x13 pan. Place the chicken in the pan, sprinkle with the salt and pepper. Pour the shallots and sauce over the chicken, making sure the chicken is well coated in the sauce.

5) Cover the pan and cook for one hour covered. Then remove the cover, spoon the sauce over the chicken, and cook for another 30 minutes.

Anticipating the Holy Day Every Day

Mrs. C., the non-Jewish wife of Dr. H, a resident of a memory care unit, informed me of her husband’s request for a Jewish calendar. Her call came in in the middle of June. I promised to deliver it the next day.

Calendar in hand, I turned to Dr. H. “Is there a reason that you suddenly find the need for a Jewish calendar?”

“Rabbi, what don’t you understand? I want to know when Yom Kippur will be observed.”

I found it fascinating that what was on the mind of Dr. H. was when Yom Kippur would be observed.

Regardless of one’s background, affiliation, or how religious one is, the Jewish heart pulsates each and every day of the year, beckoning to meet G-d on Yom Kippur terms. On Yom Kippur we are holy, remorseful and fully engaged with closeness with one’s Creator. The longing for the day of Yom Kippur lies in the deep recesses of our heart every day of the year.

Wherever you may find yourself this Yom Kippur, stop and meditate. Realize you are one with your Creator. Savor the sacred moment and spread its spirit throughout your year.

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
