AS GOOD AS IT GETS

By Jo Strausz Rosen

I want to take a moment this week to give a shout out to my colleagues at Jewish Senior Life. Whether they take care of the building, the residents, or the administrative aspects of the agency, they all share an inspiring level of interest in our older adults and dedication to their work. They arrange frequent team meetings (often on Zoom) to discuss essential needs of our residents. They collaborate about best practices for making our agency fiscally responsible and available to all who need us. They poll residents and staff for their opinions about all aspects of living here. They incorporate advice from our sister agencies and expertise from colleagues at other senior residential communities around the country. They check in with each other and involve our volunteers and families in our community.

HEART HEALTHY FOODS FOR

(LATE) FALL

Here at JSL, we provide nutritious ways to add more produce to residents' diets, one of the best ways to prevent heart disease.

Researchers have observed that increasing fruit and vegetable consumption, especially fruit, was associated with less cardiovascular disease.

JANET ANTIN:

A LIFE IN SERVICE

Janet Antin, one of our Jewish Senior Life Sales and Marketing Consultants, is passionate and knowledgeable about assisted living for older adults. Janet has the experience to assist older adults and their families in navigating what is the best fit for people who seek quality care for their loved ones.

Although Janet is new to this position, she has devoted much of her professional life to working in the older adult population. After achieving a degree in early elementary education, Janet worked at Borman Hall as Administrative Assistant, then moved to MediLodge, also known as Menorah House, serving as a liaison to the Jewish community. She spent time at Elan Village, the former Prentis Manor in Southfield, working in the admissions department, but when they closed in 2002, she dedicated the last 20 years working on behalf of our Jewish Senior Life communities.

Today’s Seekers and Searchers

Many human traits have been revealed since Covid began. We see love, care, fear and anticipation. The list goes on. What I have found to be most beautiful is how common it has become for people of all walks of life to search and to seek; to grapple and to wonder; to question and to doubt; to discover clarity and to relish sanctity.

Many of the seniors with whom I work have begun to join sessions and conference calls in order to learn and absorb a word of wisdom, a message so current, so promising and so uplifting.

I am so touched by the many seekers and searchers who have flooded our senior community. Searching and seeking is clearly an indication of a living and pulsating being. We live our daily lives to reach yet one step higher and greater. Life could often be seen as a tease, yet we always have the option to view life as an opportunity to seek and search for truth.

Many have shared that the insights they have gained because of their search was most refreshing to them. It paved a new path of life for them, to probe for deeper meaning.

Our tradition teaches us that reward is granted for weathering the storms of life and not for arriving at one’s final destination.

L’Chaim!

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
