HADASSAH

L'DOR V'DOR

by Jo Strausz Rosen

This past Wednesday, Elizabeth Silver, and Sophie Klisman, two Holocaust Survivors who reside happily at Meer Apartments, were the featured speakers at the L’Dor V’Dor Luncheon for Hadassah of Greater Detroit honoring all Holocaust Survivors. Melissa Liverman brought her children, two Hillel students, and she shared her grandmother’s Survivor story, admitting to feeling great kinship with Sophie and Elizabeth. Over 150 guests supported the event in the tented outdoor space at Temple Beth El in Bloomfield Hills.

FRIENDS

Just about a month ‘til the Bessie Spectorz”l Oldest Jewish Americans Celebration! It’s one of my favorite days of the year, not just because I love planning parties, but also because it’s so great to see the community come together to honor our oldest members. It heartens me to see that with our culture so youth focused, we, as a community, take a day to celebrate our oldest members. Older adults often feel unseen, but nobody feels that way at this event. Not only do our honorees feel seen and honored, but we all get to see people we know – volunteers and family members have as much fun seeing old friends as the honorees!

And all this is possible because the family of Bessie Spectorz”l, led by Joan Chernoff-Epstein, saw her having a marvelous time at this annual luncheon and decided to make sure our older adults continue to have this precious experience by sponsoring the event. Bravo to Joan and to third (fourth? Hundredth?) time chairs Jain Lauter, Joyce Berlin Weingarten, and Julie Zussman and the incredible committee and group of volunteers they lead.

It is absolutely not too late to get in on the fun. The honoree form and the RSVP form are available online (or call me if you don’t do online).

New items! We are fully stocked with gifts for kids of all ages. From baby’s first handprint kits to baby and toddler toys to fun and active toys for older kids, we have you covered for the grandkids and great-grandkids. And coming soon – men’s shirts and windbreakers. Also coming soon, expansion plans for the FRIENDS department store! (just kidding, but a girl can dream, right?)

Speaking of dreaming, Meer residents are dreaming of learning Hebrew. If you’re a fluent Hebrew speaker and you’d like to share your Ivrit with enthusiastic learners, call me b’telefon!

WORKOUT OF

THE WEEK

All about balance! These exercises are designed to improve your balance and strength, and help prevent falls.

Being near someone you love makes you sleepy. This is because they induce a wave of oxytocin, which has been shown to promote a sense of calm and relaxation - and may benefit sleep. So next time someone falls asleep while you're talking to them, try to take it as a compliment!

I Shall Not Fear

In light of global turbulence, I am republishing this vital event that occurred with me. I am encouraged to share this inspiration with you, my dear readers.

Approximately two years ago as I pulled up to a medical facility, I spotted an unusual license plate in front of me that touched me and evoked deep feelings in my soul.

The license plate read, “Lo eera” These words in Hebrew translate as “I shall not fear.” These words are actually recited daily in our prayers. In fact, with these two words we conclude the well-known melody of Adon Olam.

The fact that the license plate on the rear of the car in front of me was facing me meant that I was to glean a lesson from it. Through this unique license plate, I was reassured by my Creator not to fear even while the world around me often seems to be unsettled. The license plates’ declaration was a direct and poignant divine message to me and now I hope to you, the reader that “I shall not fear!”

Moments later I came to realize the relevance and potency of this crucial timely message.

Ten minutes after my entry into the facility, the fire alarm went off. Everyone was asked to quickly evacuate. I was standing outside holding the book of Psalms and thinking, “Maybe the time is now to put this lesson into action. “Lo eera - I shall not fear.”

I was so convinced that “I shall not fear” was my Creator reaching out to me, that I tucked a photocopy of the license plate into my High Holiday prayer book and with it I prayed with a full heart.

While sharing this occurrence with a friend of mine, he questioned my excitement as these are the words that conclude our daily prayer of Adon Olom.

“What don’t you understand?” I replied. “These words may be written in the prayer book and recited daily. These very words, however, were hand delivered to me personally from heaven’s door to my door. How could I not be excited."

In his famous Psalm 23, King David cries out, “Even when I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I shall not fear (Lo eera) for You (my Creator) are with me.”

Fear and intimidation are at the core of many of our failures. Together, let us resolve to muster our every ounce of courage and to fear nothing but G-d Alone.

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
