| Left to right: Andi Sklar, Libby Sklar, Sima Parr, Libby Ben Moche, and David Sklar | This week, members of the family of Leo Sklarzl gathered to celebrate the installation of a giant metal piece of kinetic art he designed that now resides on Ring Road in West Bloomfield on the campus of Meer Apartments at JSL. The crowd took some time to speak of Leo’s many acts of gemillut chassidim, acts of loving kindness that brought him immense pleasure. His son, David spoke of Leo as a joy maker who loved to surprise and delight friends and strangers alike. Everyone who knew him said his affable nature and generous heart made him a beacon of light. People were drawn to him. | Read about JSL's Live and Learn program in the online version of Jewish Federation of Detroit's "Fed Focus." | |
LOL!
There’s nothing like a good laugh to make your day, and on Sunday, November 17, we’ll be sharing lots of yucks at our Lives Well Lived: LOL! comedy event. Lives Well Lived is our annual FRIENDS event to support the “special sauce” FRIENDS brings to JSL residents. Please call me or visit jslmi.org/events/jsls-lives-well-lived/ for more information on sponsorship.
Volunteer Opportunities
We’d love to have you become a part of JSL. There are lots of opportunities to come help out with activities, boutiques, bistro/café, etc. listed on our website.
A few highlights:
Casino - If you can push a wheelchair and you like to have fun, you are invited to be a casino buddy for a Fleischman excursion to the MGM Casino on August 27 or 28. We need about 8 volunteers, so this is a great opportunity for a group of friends.
Flowers - Trader Joe’s donates flowers for Fleischman and Meer residents to do flower arranging every week. We’re looking for a volunteer to pick them up from Trader Joe’s at 15 and Telegraph and deliver them to Fleischman between 8-9am Monday morning.
Krohlik Café (Meer) – The café needs a few good men and/or women in the café on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, from 11:30am – 1:30pm.
Please feel free to call or email me if you’d like to volunteer or would like more information.

| | Susan Tauber has been bringing her therapy dogs to JSL since 2016. Pearl, Charlie, and Susan combined have done more than 1,300 visits! She says that during every visit there is at least one very special moment that reminds her why she and her dogs visit hospitals, schools, memory care facilities, programs for individuals with special needs, people in hospice, special events, reading programs at libraries and more. | The office chair is believed to have been invented by Charles Darwin. The scientist had the idea to attach wheels to his chair so he could move around between his many tables. | | |

Do you know an amazing 80+
year old?
| Nominate them to be part of our incredible celebration on May 18, 2025, at Shaarey Zedek. | Located on the third floor of the Fleischman Residence, the Dorothy & Peter D. Brown Memory Care Pavilion provides a warm and family-like environment for older adults with memory impairments and/or dementia-related conditions. The residents have weekly art therapy sessions, which can reduce the feelings of anxiety, depression and stress. Studies also show that seniors who participate in creative arts experience lower levels of loneliness and stay more positive in general. | Fleischman Assisted Living residents Marilyn Dizik (left) and Madalyn Pudavick (with the help of volunteer Jodi Eichler), right, had some messy fun with some slime, and later on added food coloring. | Get summer beach workout vibes with the "Metro Active" group, an aerobics class that is safe, heart healthy and gentle on the joints. Increase the strength, balance and range of motion needed for daily living. Vibe on! | Summer is the season for cool, crisp salads - hearty enough to satisfy, light enough to refresh. Tropically inspired, this summer salad with poppy seed dressing just seems to fit the bill. | | |

The Game is Real
A story is told of a great Chassidic master known as the Maggid of Mezritch. Once, his son came running to him in tears. The Maggid comforted him and asked why he was crying. The child explained that he had been playing a game of hide-and-seek with his friends who were hiding.
They remained in their hiding places for a long time assuming their hiding places were too good, but they got tired of waiting. They came out of hiding and discovered that they had been tricked. The one whose turn it was to seek them went home instead of searching. That is why his son was crying.
When the Maggid of Mezritch heard his son’s story, he too began to cry. His son asked him why He was crying. The Maggid told him that G‑d has the same complaint.
What did the Maggid mean? G‑d says, “I hide Myself from you, but the purpose of My hiding is that you should come and search for Me. But instead of searching for Me, you go away and busy yourselves with other things.”
It is during these days of mourning for the destruction of both of our holy temples that we strive to reconnect and renew our relationship with our Creator.

L’Chaim!
More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
