THE END

by Jo Strausz Rosen

The older we get, we must face a variety of unavoidable pokes and prods during visits to doctors to stay healthy, live long and prosper. Some folks have a serious aversion to medical procedures and put off meeting with their physicians out of fear. Buck up. We must face our fears and just do it if we seek a long life and opportunities to live in good health.

For those who have not yet experienced the wonder of colonoscopy, it’s somewhat of a rite of passage for most adults. I used to work on behalf of The American Cancer Society who highly suggests beginning with at-home tests you can send to your physician to test for cancer. If you are healthy, ten years later, you undergo your first colonoscopy.

Need Cooks!

Or at least ace sandwich makers. We’re looking for a few good people who can roll up the delicious sandwiches Marvin’s Bistro’s and Krohlik’s Café’s customers love, and who enjoy shmoozing with our customers – every penny helps Jewish Senior Life! Not a cook? No worries – we also need a few cashiers.

Casino Trip Buddies

Willing to gamble a couple of hours that you’ll have a great time accompanying Fleischman residents to the casino?

Rosh Hashanah

Sharing the holidays with residents is one of the great joys of Jewish Senior Life. We’re looking for a volunteer who can lead a short service (materials are provided) at Coville in Oak Park at 4:00pm on Friday, October 4, the second day of Rosh Hashanah.

We’re making room for our fall / winter line in the boutique, so we’ve marked all spring/summer apparel down. Come in for great deals (and help us clean out our closet)!

LOL / LWL

Lives Well Lived is approaching and we are prepared to have fun for a great cause – I hope you will join us on Sunday, November 17 for an afternoon of comedy. We also invite you to join us as a sponsor of the 2024 annual FRIENDS of JSL Lives Well Lived campaign.

Lives Well Lived sponsorship helps us bring delight to our residents through special projects like last year’s resident anthology “Don’t Write Me Off! Thirty-Nine Stories of Older Adulthood,” the annual Bessie Spector Oldest Jewish Americans Celebration, and our resident fashion shows, which are the highlight of every season! For more information or to become a sponsor, visit jslmi.org/lwl or call me.

The tiny pocket in your jeans was designed to hold pocket watches. It was needed for cowboys in the 1800s, although now it's mainly a decorative feature.

OAK PARK SOCK HOP

At the Prentis Sock Hop Happy Hour in Oak Park, residents enjoyed a nostalgic afternoon filled with the lively spirit of the 1950s. The event featured a delightful selection of snacks, beer and wine. Guests socialized to a curated playlist of classic 1950s tunes, creating a joyful and retro atmosphere that brought back fond memories and encouraged lively participation. They even had a surprise guest - a resident came dressed as Elvis Presley!

JSL ISLAND STYLE

Hechtman residents enjoyed a "luau" with tropical food, island decor, and a set list overflowing with Jimmy Buffett songs performed by Ron Devon. They appreciated the opportunity to celebrate in a “warm” way with flamingos, leis and good times before the summer draws to a close.

WEEKLY RECIPE

Football is back, so why not pair it with some delicious, healthy nachos? An easy recipe to KICKOFF the season!

The Wisdom Behind "Say Cheese"

“Say cheese” used to be a term used by photographers when arranging their photo set up.

Only a few decades ago, photo taking was reserved for the trained photographer who would arrive at a family event with his Kodak or Minolta camera. It was his responsibility not only to take the professional photos but to position each member in the exact place he or she needed to be so that his photo would yield the desired results.

When all was ready, he would announce, “Say cheese” so that everyone can give their best smile.

Things are vastly different today. With the wide usage of cell phones, each one becomes a photographer, each having the ability to take anyone’s photo at any time without any prior notice nor permission (and then post it anywhere). Today, “Say cheese” is no longer popular or even necessary.

The wisdom behind “Say cheese” is that it allows for permission of the one whose photo is being taken to approve and to prepare for it.

No doubt that technology offers tremendous benefits. However, we must see to it that our usage of technology does not breach human boundaries of respect, privacy and sensitivity.

Whoever thought that a rather simple expression such as “Say cheese” used by professional photographers forty years ago would carry a message today of awareness and sensitivity?

L’Chaim!

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
