Celebrate each other by celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. On Monday, January 16, we honor MLK, Jr. with his message of unity, and that America and the world could form a society where race would not impact a person's civil rights.
"Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that."
| | The Hebrew word for angel is Malach, meaning messenger: one who is sent. When I walk about the campus of JSL, I am comforted in the presence of the Malachim around me. They are not the cherubs who adorn architecture and art, but the devoted JSL staff. They are the front-line workers, the drivers, the administrators, the marketing team, the life enrichment coordinators, the leasing staff, the supervisors, the receptionists, HR and resident service coordinators, the dining room managers, front desk greeters, the med-passers, the nurses, the caregivers, volunteers, board members and vendors who work together to insure that the lives of our independent living, assisted living and memory care residents are happy and blessed. | Mind Joggers @ Fleischman |
Fleischman residents played a word game at the "Mind Joggers" activity.
Life Enrichment Assistant Daniel Kline said, "This is great for the residents because it helps to keep their wits sharp and their minds working, while also providing a social environment where even those who don’t like to talk in front of crowds can play along."
| ‘JEWISH NOBEL’ GOES TO GROUP PRIZE | A prize established to honor a single inspiring Jew with a lifetime of achievements has been awarded this year to a nameless group whose work is ongoing: Jewish activists in war-ravaged Ukraine. “Recognizing the extraordinary nature of events dominating the past 11 months, The Genesis Prize Selection Committee has decided to depart from the usual custom of awarding the prize to a single Jewish individual,” the group said in a statement. |

Show and Tell at the
Hechtman Art Show
|
A celebration of art and storytelling was on display January 10, 2023, at Jewish Senior Life’s Hechtman Apartments, as the artistic residents displayed their artwork for residents, staff and friends.
Resident artists included Constance Bair, Josephine Dechicchis, Carole Master, Dale Saham, Lucy Secher, Ann Spencer, and Sandra Tarnopol.
The artwork spanned decades, going back to the 1990s, and featured this year’s work as well. Some of the residents featured have been lifelong artists, while others recently rediscovered their passion for art.
| The Inside Scoop About Jewish Senior Life |
Residents and members of the JSL leadership team gave the ‘inside scoop’ about Jewish Senior Life January 12. Facilitated by Director of Residential Marketing and Community Relations Tracey Proghovnick, this educational presentation provided insight on tips and resources about LIVING at JSL. "When considering making a move to a community, it's so important to hear from those who have already made the choice to live and work there," Proghovnick said. "The real experiences that are shared provide guidance and comfort during a time of transition and change."
Guest speaker Hechtman resident Roz Rogers said, "So many programs are available. Moving here was the best decision I've made, it's terrific."
Meer resident, guest speaker and President of the Resident Council Nancy Kalef adds, "Everything is available here. JSL is the best place to be. It is safe and we feel loved."

They're quick and easy to prepare and leave behind very little clean-up; win-win! | Couch exercises: some stretches for your neck, shoulders and back. Do you find you wake up with stiff shoulders? To Forgive and Be Forgiven
Your birth is G-d saying that You Matter, that you are an indispensable contribution to the world. Since your contribution is essential, no problem can impede you from achieving the purpose for which you were created. G-d gives you the resources to overcome every pain and obstacle, to heal from every hurt or abuse.
The ability to forgive is one of the resources that G-d has given you. But it is up to you to use it. Forgiveness in Hebrew is “mechilah,” which connects to the root of the word “mochul,” meaning a circle. Life is meant to be a circle encompassing all our experiences and relationships in one harmonious, seamless, whole. When someone hurts us, the circle is broken. Forgiveness is the way we mend the fracture
Forgiveness means not merely forgiving the person who hurt us, but forgiving ourselves, forgiving G-d, forgiving even life itself with all its bizarre and often cruel twists and turns.
Forgiveness is letting go and building the confidence necessary to experience healthy growth. It is declaring that you will no longer remain locked in the past as a victim of circumstances; that you will no longer perpetuate negative life-patterns through blame and anger; that you will instead access the strength and love that G-d gives you in every moment in order to fulfill the unique and singular purpose for which you and only you were created.
Forgiveness requires work. But, most importantly, it requires a connection to G-d, the Giver of life. When you remember that your birth is G-d’s way of saying You Matter, that you are vital and important, irreplaceable and essential to the perfection of G-d’s world, then you can rise above the pain others have caused you and find the love and strength to forgive both them and yourself.
When you forgive, the circle is again complete, and you find yourself encompassed by the whole of G-d’s creation and feel yourself to be an integral part. When you forgive, you have taken control of your life, rather than being a victim of it. By Simon Jacobson

L’Chaim!
More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
