8/80 SPOTLIGHT:

ROZ GARBER

Former Detroit Public Schools teacher Roz Garber has a witty and self-deprecating personality. She has more energy than women half her age, performing yoga and walking daily. She is excited to participate in a very special occasion as she is one of eight honorees in the 30th Annual Eight Over Eighty celebration on May 21.

When not reading or capturing the latest on TV, Roz loves keeping up with her children and grandchildren by phone and email. She plays Mahjong weekly on her electronic table with a group of friends.

NAMASTE!

CHAIR YOGA

Chair Yoga with Bharti

Residents of Hechtman Apartments in West Bloomfield took time to bend, stretch and breathe during Chair Yoga with instructor, Bharti, this week. Bharti focuses on breathing as much as stretching, then combining those exercises for a relaxing, effective workout.

She also encourages residents to do this on their own time every day, reminding them it helps improve flexibility, mobility and muscle retainment. See the "At Home Workout" for more / an example.

CANINE COMPANY

Charlie the therapy dog came to visit the 2nd and 3rd floors at Coville Apartments in Oak Park this week. As you can see from the photos, a good time was had by all -- and Charlie’s mom assured everyone he was enjoying his visit despite his somewhat 'grumpy' appearance!

Come Home!

I love it here. I love the people – residents, staff and volunteers. It’s a lively community with something going on all the time. It’s a great place to live, but the next best option is volunteering in the boutiques, bistro, cafes and dining rooms, right in the heart of the action. Come visit us and let me show you what’s going on! Call or email me, Beth Robinson, at 248-592-5062 / brobinson@jslmi.org.

REMEMBRANCE: RECREATING A JEWISH FAMILY'S RECIPE

Researching dishes in the archives of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, James Beard Award-winning chef Alon Shaya found recipes scribbled on bits of paper, retrieved from Jewish ghettos and concentration camps during the Holocaust. Among the items rescued was a Hungarian family cookbook whose recipes brought back memories for Holocaust survivor Steven Fenves. Shaya and Fenves talk with CBS correspondent Lee Cowan about how food can offer solace in the midst of suffering, and provide the imperative to remember.

Hug Yourself

Each Monday morning at 10:58, I get to hear the same comforting announcement from the exercise instructor at the Coville apartments. After the residents have exerted the effort to exercise their bodies, she announces, “And now give yourselves a big hug.”

It must feel loving and empowering. In fact, it reminds me of the daily hugs we give ourselves each morning when we don our tallit (prayer shawl) in preparation to prayer. We wrap the tallit around us as if we are hugging ourselves. One way to experience a successful day is to begin the day by acknowledging ourselves. Thinking of our daily (tallit) wrap and hug we can appreciate the exercise instructor’s request to the residents to hug themselves.

L’Chaim!

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
