JSL HAPPENINGS

AND, SCENE!

Every month at Hechtman, we can find the "Readers' Theater" group, led by resident Harriet Hessenthaler. In the above video, Ruth Levy and Dan Benyas read from a funny script as other participants laugh during the table reading. Sometimes crying or laughing are the only options left, and laughing feels better right now.

The boutiques in the Meer and Fleischman buildings are not just for residents. They do provide the fun of shopping without leaving the building. But JSL supporters are also invited to come into the building to find great fashions and gifts for any occasion. The boutiques are run by volunteers and every penny goes to support quality of life programs at Jewish Senior Life. We have new items almost every week. Great stuff, great prices, and all for a great purpose!

SHABBAT SHALOM

Rabbi Dovid S. Polter, Community Chaplain

A Double Measure

Passover celebrates the Israelite’s exodus from Egyptian bondage. They proceeded from there to receive G-d’s Torah at the foot of Mt. Sinai.

An integral part of Passover is the traditional seder. Every food item must be verified to not only be kosher… but also kosher for Passover, an added level of sanctity. We find a similar idea when the Israelites stood at the foot of Mt. Sinai. G-d designated them not only as a holy nation… but as a priestly nation. Priests (kohanim) are charged with the sacred mission of practicing an added measure of holiness. Thus, not only are the Israelites holy by being part of G-d’s nation, but they are also charged to uphold an even higher level of sanctity - that of priesthood.

On a practical level: As Jews celebrate Passover today in 2023, we need to remember and be proud of the Divine injunction to us, “Be holy. It’s not enough to be endowed with holiness but we must aspire to reach a higher level of sanctity by nurturing a pure mind and body.

L’Chaim!

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
