The celebration of the Jewish holidays has always been rooted in the duality of joy and sorrow, hope and suffering. Throughout Jewish history, these moments of festivity and reflection have been interwoven with periods of persecution, displacement, and unspeakable atrocities. This tension between the obligation to celebrate and the awareness of human suffering is at the heart of what it means to live with faith in a broken world.
As we commemorated the one-year memorial of October 7, 5785 this past week at Congregation Shaarey Zedek, our thoughts continue to be with the hostages and their families, and our Israeli family and friends who are deprived of the joy of celebration. Our grief casts a pall over our festivals which can feel hollow or even unjustifiable. How do we gather in happiness when others are enduring unimaginable pain? There is no simple answer, but it lies in the nature of Jewish tradition itself.

Kick Off the New Year Here!
It’s the beginning of a brand spanking new year and after we get done atoning (and eating), it’s time to look ahead and consider how we want to use the time G-d has generously given us. I don’t think of this as creating a to-do list, but rather an annual opportunity to make sure I live my life in line with my dearest values. If you’re reading this, caring for our older adults is probably one of your dearest values too. I hope you’ll express that value by spending time with us at Jewish Senior Life, supporting Lives Well Lived, making a tribute, etc.!

Volunteer
Toward that end, we have many great volunteer opportunities, and we’re always open to new ideas. If you have an expertise or interest you’d like to share, whether it’s a one-time lecture / discussion / demonstration or a weekly class, we’d love to have you bring something new to JSL.
Some of our most urgent volunteer needs include:
Marvin’s Bistro – weekly 11 – 1
Krolik Café – weekly 11 – 1
Sharon’s boutique – Monday, Thursday, and Friday 11 – 2
Out trips with residents – as they are scheduled.
Friendly visits to residents – schedule is flexible.
Please call me at 248-592-5062 to discuss how you can be a part of JSL.
Join a Committee
Another wonderful way to get involved is to join an event committee. If you’re interested, please give me a call to talk about our upcoming celebrations.

And last, but certainly not least, and this only takes two hours, you could join us at Lives Well Lived on Sunday, November 17 at 2pm. We’ll be welcoming the hilarious Al Lubel for an afternoon of comedy and camaraderie. Al Lubel is a veteran comedian who has entertained TV audiences on Johnny Carson, Jay Leno, and David Letterman, as well as on stages across the country. We’re thrilled to welcome him to Lives Well Lived and we’d be thrilled to welcome you too!
Information, tickets, and sponsorships are available at jslmi.org/lwl.

- Lots of accessories
- Men’s apparel and gifts

A group of Hechtman residents enjoyed a warm, delicious batch of pumpkin muffins, prepared by JSL Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, Elizabeth Freyre. In addition to enjoying a healthy and tasty treat, participants filled out a "favorite things" list while the muffins were baking, adding a dash of "getting to know each other" friendship-building fun.
Elizabeth said about the recipe, "Pumpkin muffins are the perfect addition to a fall breakfast or an afternoon pick-me-up. They offer health benefits from these enriching ingredients - pumpkin, whole wheat flour, oats, avocado oil, and coconut sugar."
| On World Mental Health Day, celebrated annually on October 10th, JSL staff in Oak Park hosted an enlightening Relaxation Workshop, focusing on the role that scent has in managing stress and anxiety. The discussion explored how fragrances, like lavender, chamomile and citrus, can impact our mood and provide a sense of wellbeing. Following the talk, residents participated in a hands-on workshop, where they inhaled a variety of essential oils and created personal relaxation vials to bring home. | Spinach Gnocchi for a Break-the-Fast win! Buttery, delicious and cheesy is perfect for a Yom Kippur side dish. | Research continues to show that muscle strengthening is imperative for knee osteoarthritis relief and can bring powerful results. The key is finding movements that actually feel good. Whether you are just starting out on your fitness journey or have experience, this video will give you options to work on for stronger knee flexors and knee extensors - both equally important for relief. | Pound cake is called that because the original recipe used one pound of each ingredient. | | |
Rabbi Dovid S. Polter, Community Chaplain
A Yizkor Service to Remember
Dedicated to our all our departed loved ones,
and to the heroic IDF soldiers who passed in combat
The story is told of a mother to be who struggled through her labor pains. Her own mother stood at her bedside, coaching and comforting. The excruciating labor pains continued without seeing the light at the end of the tunnel – the expectant healthy birth. The young woman and her mother were at their wits end, not knowing to whom to turn.
The mother recalled the narrative of our Matriarch Rivka, who also experienced tremendous pregnancy pains and discomfort. Rivka turned to the spiritual leader of her time to decipher for her the meaning behind her great discomfort.
The mother rushed to see the rabbi of the town who would hopefully advise her and offer his blessings for an immediate birth. To her chagrin, the rabbi was out of town. However, his custodian, also a man of great wisdom was trained by the rabbi and was available to hear her. He listened and took the bold move of suggesting to gather immediately a minyan, a quorum of ten people outside of her hospital room and to recite the traditional memorial Yizkor prayer. This was a rather unusual piece of advice, the mother abided, nevertheless.

L’Chaim!
More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
