| JSL: THE AGING CHRONICLES | Twenty-four energized Fleischman residents sat exercising together led by professional instructor Michelle Black. As I walked past the circle, I stopped to reflect on the kinetic movements of their arms and legs, the colors of their clothing and their elegant, lined faces. Time, elusive and relentless, shapes us, weaving the fabric of our experiences into a tapestry. Growing older is a colorful journey of transformation, punctuated with subtle shades of gray as profound changes occur within us. As we traverse the years, the passage of time not only alters our physical appearance but also profoundly impacts our perceptions, priorities, and relationships. | Read about JSL's "Under The Big Top" event in this week's Detroit Jewish News. | |
Right now, it looks like an episode of “Home Improvement” in Sharon’s boutique. Our wonderful building staff are adding hanging bars to the storage room for our fabulous fall collection. Next step will be hanging it all up and then getting ready for our fall fashion show! One of the highlights of the FRIENDS year, our fashion shows feature our residents modeling boutique apparel and accessories. The public is welcome to drop in for this fun afternoon (and shop the boutiques for clothing, accessories and gifts of course!)
Meer Fashion Show – Tuesday, September 24, 1:00pm

On the subject of improvements, we’ve made a slight adjustment to our annual Lives Well Lived event – it’s earlier! In response to our audience, we’re holding it on Sunday afternoon, November 17 at 2:00pm. But the real reason to come is for the comedy and the camaraderie! And, of course, to support FRIENDS of Jewish Senior Life. Invitations will go out in early October and will include sponsors who have committed by August 23. We’d love to have you there. We’d love to have your support. And we’d love to have the chance to acknowledge your commitment to FRIENDS! For more information on sponsorship or to sign up, visit https://jslmi.org/events/jsls-lives-well-lived/ or give me a call!
Do you have a crew that would like to volunteer together? Join us for resident out trips to places like the casino, concerts, shopping, restaurants, boat cruises, etc. This is a great opportunity to have fun together while helping our residents have a great time!
Sundays at JSL – If you’d rather volunteer on the weekend, our residents love volunteer visitors and Sunday afternoon is a great time to come hang out and lead bingo, play games, do puzzles, visit, or any activity you’d like to bring to JSL. Great opportunity for teens and us working folks.
Bottom line, JSL wants you! (to come have fun with us 😊)

| When I consider all the Eight Over 80 Honorees who have received Jewish Senior Life’s Tikkun Olam Awards, I am inspired to dream of a realm where time flows differently, and there exists a special gathering place where some of the greatest minds and spirits from Jewish history converge. It is a sanctuary where wisdom, courage, and faith intertwine to create a beacon of light for the world. Here are some of the awesome eight over eighty... | Nominate an honoree today for the 32nd Annual Celebration to be held May 18, 2025. | |
HECHTMAN
READERS' THEATRE
|
|
Bravo to the residents of the Hechtman Readers' Theatre who performed seven skits for a delighted audience last week. Director Harriett Hessenthaler and Assistant Director Adele Nodler led numerous rehearsals for the 13 actors and actresses.
Harriett and Adele shared, "We find the entire process invigorating. Watching the growth of the actors is exciting and performing in front of a live audience is fun and inspiring."
The show will go on after the Jewish holidays, as the group will reconvene and begin rehearsing this Fall.

Rabbi Dovid S. Polter, Community Chaplain
The Rest is History
The holiest moment of Shabbat is late afternoon. At that time, Shabbat prayer known as Mincha “Menuchah” translated as rest and tranquility, is mentioned seven times.
“Menucha” alludes to the seventh day of the week – Shabbat. It also hints of the moments in the week that we consecrate. These are Shabbat-like moments.
Since time immemorial, Jews have valued and experienced the remarkable gift of setting aside a day of the week, as well as moments throughout the week for peace, serenity and sacredness.
As the expression goes, “Jews did not keep the Shabbat, but rather Shabbat kept the Jews.”
Pledge to yourself today to make your weekly Shabbat unique and special.

L’Chaim!
More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
