Terry the painter sent me a text. He says he’s ready to come to the house and begin our home beautification, but I’m distracted by all the things we must remove from the walls and the closets for him to begin.
The closets. If I add closets to the list of things to paint, they must be emptied, items sorted, donated and the things I “need” must put somewhere until the paint is dry…So I’m thinking… nah… the closets don’t have to get painted right now.
I concentrate on removing the art from the walls, and now I’m admiring the photographs of my children through the years…. Remembering each milestone moment in the lives of my family… instead, I begin to empty the bookshelves. I glance at naked walls with nail holes. We are collectors of decorative art and treasures…colorful glass and vintage pottery.
I’m making the ‘frantic emoji’ face in my brain right now. So much to do. Trying to simply do it carefully, one piece at a time. I appreciate handling beloved artifacts. I imagine this is what it will be like when we decide to sell our home, to move into the next chapter, when our lives slow down a bit. What things would we bring with us?

JEWISH NEWS

Today is the Ides of March. You know what that means, don’t you? Because of the assassination of Julius Caesar on this day, it has always carried a whiff of doom and gloom. For us, the portent refers to the already dwindling supplies of matzah and walnuts at our local grocery stores. It also, on a much happier note, means we’re getting ready for Pesach at Jewish Senior Life.
One of the nicest traditions we have here is volunteer seder leaders. Last year, I led two (even though I’m not exactly a volunteer) and it was just beautiful to sit down and share the holiday with our residents. It’s like a family celebration x 10. Luckily, we have some regular volunteers who come every year. But we also have a few openings and would love to invite you to break matzah, recite blessings, drink the four cups, lean to the left, and visit with JSL residents over the seder table.
We are looking for seder leaders for Oak Park and West Bloomfield:
- April 22, 4pm
- April 23, 4pm
Seders last approximately 40 minutes, but you’re welcome to stay longer! Please contact me at brobinson@jslmi.org /
248-592-5062 to sign up.
We have all kinds of other great volunteer opportunities too. Whatever your schedule or your interests, we’d love to have you be part of the JSL community. Take a look at our volunteer openings and see what looks like fun. In addition to the listings on the volunteer page, we’re also looking for a bona fide bookworm to run a book club.
| | After you run out and make sure you get your Pesach supplies, please make sure you sign up your older friends and family (age 95 or older by 12/31/2024) for the Bessie Spector Oldest Jewish Americans Celebration, which will be at Adat Shalom on June 21. After a festive, circus-themed brunch, we will recognize honorees and hand out goodie bags. If you haven’t seen it, you may not believe it, but this is one of the liveliest events of the year! If you’d like to join us as a volunteer, it takes more people than an actual circus (but is just as much fun). |
While you’re doing all your errands, be sure to stop by the Fleischman (Sharon’s) or Meer boutiques for our great fall/winter sale or nab some afikomen loot from our toy selection.

At Meer Apartments, residents are encouraged to participate in Powerback Rehabilitation classes featuring Age in Motion and Balance in Action for strengthening and stretching their bodies. These in-house programs actively assist them in aging in place, something the residents have found important for their health.
Molly Petreanu, MS CCC-SLP, Director of Rehab-Speech Therapy, discussed the many health benefits of the Balance in Action Program, such as increasing artery dilation, reducing joint stiffness, and decreasing joint pain, overall relaxation and lowering the risk of falling.
This program has positively impacted the Meer community and one of the graduates tells of how it has enhanced her wellness personally. Helen Siegel, 99 years young, says she went in with pain and because of Powerback Age in Motion, she is now pain free. If you would like more information about Powerback Rehabilitation and the Age in Motion Program, contact Molly Petreanu: 947-366-0749.

Never Cease the Moment...Seize the Moment!
At our weekly JSL class, presented at Prentis and Hechtman, we study from a textbook entitled, “The People of the Word.” The book presents fascinating insights on fifty different Hebrew words. One of the topics we recently covered was time.
In the chapter titled, “Seize the Moment,” the commentary Rashi on the verse in Jeremiah explains, “The root of the Hebrew word r’g’a’ (moment) means to be folded like an accordion. Time is thus comprised of a sequence of moments tightly packed together. We can choose to unfold these moments, seeing each one for the unique opportunity it presents; or we can leave time folded up, allowing the unrepeatable moments to pass by unnoticed and unappreciated. This is our choice to make.”
I wish to add a note related to music. A folded accordion will not produce any sound. Each moment carries within it a musical note that beckons us to hear it, unfold it and use it wisely. Thus, it is advised to unwrap each moment and apply it, for only then can we enjoy the music it yields, just like an open and stretched accordion.
So let us never cease the moment; instead let us always seize the moment.

L’Chaim!
More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
