PHOTOGRAPHIC MEMORIES

By Jo Strausz Rosen

When I was a child, I used to spend rainy days sitting on the floor in front of a pine bachelor chest of drawers full of old photos. My father supervised me with these precious mementos, and he also loved looking at the photos and sharing stories about his youth and extended family. He laughed with tears in his eyes reminiscing about meeting my mother in the Army and his boxing days, as we viewed the photo of him with his dukes up, fists in gloves, shirtless in boxing shorts, his fly unzipped!

Wise Advice in Overcoming Life’s Many Tests

I found this piece most inspiring and entertaining.

There was a man who suffered many challenges in his life. He told his Rabbi that he didn’t want the tests. His Rabbi replied, “Take three pots filled with water. Cook a potato in one, a raw egg in the second and put coffee, sugar, and milk in the third.”

An hour later, the Rabbi showed him that the raw egg became hard, the hard potato became soft, and the third pot had sweetened coffee. The Rabbi explained, “The boiling water represents life’s tests. Tests toughen soft people, Tests soften tough people and tests can make someone sweet like sweetened coffee.”

This is because people grow from the hardships they overcome.

L’Chaim!

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
