8/80 SPOTLIGHT:

JIM AUGUST

JSL is delighted to celebrate Jim August, his student, Rebecca Rabin, and all the special honorees this year at our 30th Anniversary gala luncheon. Join us in person at Congregation Shaarey Zedek, May 21, 2023. Contact nlupi@jslmi.org / 248-592-5098 for tickets and how you can honor the honorees with an ad in our ad journal.

We met Jim August in his artfully decorated and spacious high-rise condo, so much of the art from travels around the world or purchased in Detroit galleries. His wife Doris sat in on the interviews and provided color commentary. She is proud of the fact that she served on the first Eight Over 80 committee thirty years ago. Jim was born in 1935, in Detroit and grew up understanding that his family spent time giving back to the Jewish community. He feels it’s a responsibility and takes great pride in his volunteer work.

FRIDAY FUNNY

SHABBAT SHALOM

Rabbi Dovid S. Polter, Community Chaplain

Your Sole Soul

Every morning upon awakening we recite the twelve-word prayer known as modeh ani, in which we offer thanks to G-d for returning to us our soul. "I offer thanks to you...for returning to me my soul..."

All souls are spiritual, and they give life to our physical bodies.

Why is it so crucial that I receive "my soul" every morning? Why could there not be a swap of souls in heaven which would result in me getting someone else's soul?

I would like to suggest that our Creator cherishes our daily personal spiritual growth- the work we do daily with our individual souls. Before rising, each soul descends to our bodies every morning with an attached "to do list" matching the individual to whom that specific soul belongs. Every morning, we are granted the opportunity to continue our personal task of soul searching once again, resulting in self-refinement and self-improvement. If you were given anyone else's soul, you would not recognize the "to do list" and what soul work you are to be occupied in that day.

G-d derives much pleasure seeing you pick up every morning with your own spiritual to do list.

L’Chaim!

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
