Your Sole Soul
Every morning upon awakening we recite the twelve-word prayer known as modeh ani, in which we offer thanks to G-d for returning to us our soul. "I offer thanks to you...for returning to me my soul..."
All souls are spiritual, and they give life to our physical bodies.
Why is it so crucial that I receive "my soul" every morning? Why could there not be a swap of souls in heaven which would result in me getting someone else's soul?
I would like to suggest that our Creator cherishes our daily personal spiritual growth- the work we do daily with our individual souls. Before rising, each soul descends to our bodies every morning with an attached "to do list" matching the individual to whom that specific soul belongs. Every morning, we are granted the opportunity to continue our personal task of soul searching once again, resulting in self-refinement and self-improvement. If you were given anyone else's soul, you would not recognize the "to do list" and what soul work you are to be occupied in that day.
G-d derives much pleasure seeing you pick up every morning with your own spiritual to do list.
