| When someone good passes away, we celebrate their life by sharing their accomplishments. We focus on what they brought to the people around them, love, joy, laughter and resilience. This reminds us that every good life is worthy of acknowledgment. Accomplishments don't always need to be grand to be meaningful. Sometimes, it’s the way a person makes others feel or the small contributions they make that have the deepest impact. |
Join Us for Passover!
When I was growing up, we used to go to my dad’s cousin’s house for Passover. It was the best. We all enjoyed sitting around the table, discussing the holiday and its symbols, as well as its connection to current events around the world. We’d sit until the songs were all sung and the wine was all gone, and Cousin Phyllis had served her famous strawberry fluff. No one was ever in a hurry to leave. One year, I was so inspired by the warmth of our gathering that I went home and did a painting of her seder table (post seder).
Since I started at Jewish Senior Life a couple of years ago, it’s been my pleasure to lead seders in most of our buildings. But, since I cannot be in six buildings at one time, we could really use some other Pesach lovers to join us.
Seders are early (starting between 3 and 5pm, depending on the building) and short (half an hour, but you’re welcome to stay for dinner). They are in English, and we can share the Haggadah in advance, and we have a list of page numbers to cover. Absolutely no experience is necessary, just a willingness to share this special holiday. Individuals, families, kids, are all welcome. Please give me a call if you would like to participate in this very special and meaningful mitzvah.

| Watch Nancy Heinrich, CEO of Jewish Senior Life, in an insightful interview on Gracefully Greying with Henry Gornbein. She shares the benefits of living in JSL's six unique communities. |
Residents of Hechtman recently toured the newly restored Michigan Central Station in Detroit. A knowledgeable guide shared insights into the station's rich history and stunning architecture. The residents had a wonderful time exploring the building, reminiscing about its heyday, and appreciating its beauty. | Above: Cantor Zach Mondrow |
Cantors from the Michigan Board of Cantors recently performed for Holocaust survivors and residents at Meer. This year, Cantors David Propis, Daniel Gross, Gavrielle Pescador, Steve Klaper, and Zach Mondrow, accompanied by pianist Cliff Monear, delivered a beautiful selection of Jewish and Broadway music. The performance deeply touched the survivors, who expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the Cantors for sharing their talents and making the event truly special. | Sarah Gormley wrote a book about her life, including getting fired by Martha Stewart, then shared her cookie recipe with the world! | This video demonstrates exercises and movements that increase hand dexterity, strength, and function. | | |

IN MEMORIAM
Harriet Berg
"Eight Over Eighty 2018 Honoree Harriet Berg not only loved to dance but loved to teach it to children and people of all ages. She knew that her life’s mission was to make the world a better place through dance. Harriet taught classes all over the world, always representing a dedicated member of the Jewish community. She created "historical dance groups” and one of the groups, the Festival Dancers, gave poor Jewish women an opportunity to dance. They danced and toured synagogues all over Michigan in order to teach Jewish traditions." by Aviva Levi
May her memory be a blessing.

Rabbi Dovid S. Polter, Community Chaplain
On a Brooklyn Street Corner
On a mid-summer Friday afternoon on the streets of Brooklyn, New York, I was shopping for Shabbat provisions among crowds of people. I noticed an elderly European Jew who was shouting to all the passersby, "Vie Loift a Yid?!!" (Where is a Jew running?)
As many others, I viewed this man--and his unusual behavior--as another street fixture so common in New York. I kept on walking and didn't try to connect or understand this man’s intentions.
Decades have passed. Only recently have his words begun to strike me as profound and extremely insightful - about how we live our lives. I realize now that he was challenging me to value and nurture peace in my life. He was questioning my hastiness, for as a seasoned senior he believed that one must live every moment for that moment, not for the next. His words have inspired me to cherish the moment--and not to overlook or rush through it.
Perhaps his message was not to be consumed with the next moment if that will prevent us from making the best of the present. Some of us possibly have spent much of our lives looking for the next moment -- only to finally realize that our entire "present" has suddenly become swallowed by our irretrievable past.

L’Chaim!
More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
