STAND UP

AGAINST HATE

by Jo Strausz Rosen

After reading about Live and Learn at Meer Apartments, where I marveled about the recent eight sessions on News & Misinformation: Finding Accurate, Reliable Information in Today’s Information Age, I felt newly inspired to seek out informative and impactful programs. This quest led me to a presentation I heard of by The Women of Temple Israel TWOTI last Monday night, which featured the dynamic and inspiring “Accidental Activist,” Lindsay Pinchuk.

Lindsay, an entrepreneur, consultant, coach, public speaker, podcaster, and teacher, is a force to be reckoned with. In her forties, she exudes a vibrant, hardworking spirit, coupled with wisdom and intellect. Recently, Lindsay gained global recognition for being among the first to speak out on her Instagram account in the wake of the October 7th attacks. Confronting antisemitism head-on, she’s a voice of resilience, proclaiming, “It’s never wrong to do what’s right.” Her activism is driven by a profound sense of justice, fueled by the memory of the hostages taken during the conflict.

Lives Well Lived: Still Laughing After All These Years

Get ready to have fun for a good cause! This year’s Lives Well Lived (LWL) event will feature comedian Al Lubel. Al Lubel has been featured many times on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and with Jay Leno, as well as on the David Letterman Show. He tours nationally and is just a very, very funny man. About Al, Jerry Seinfeld said, “Al Lubel has one of the funniest jokes I have ever heard.” But don’t take it from me (or Jerry). Come on out on Sunday, November 17 at 2:00pm at Adat Shalom Synagogue for an afternoon of laughs to FRIENDS of Jewish Senior Life.

Our Lives Well Lived sponsors help us bring so many special opportunities to our residents – we hope you’ll help out. Sponsorships for Lives Well Lived are still available. Please call me or visit https://jslmi.org/events/jsls-lives-well-lived/ for information or to become a sponsor. Tickets are also available on the website.

Sunday Afternoons at Fleischman

Beginning September 29, on the last Sunday of each month from 2:00pm-4:00pm, we’ll be welcoming teens, parents and kids of all ages to Fleischman Residence for an informal afternoon of puzzles, games, crafts and most importantly, shmoozing! The long-term goal is to do it every Sunday at all our residences, so if you or someone you know is interested in hanging out with us, please call me or shoot me an email. The more the merrier! You are the secret sauce that makes Jewish Senior Life special!

Whatever day you have some free time on your hands, we invite you to join us on a JSL campus, enriching the lives of our residents. Check out all the opportunities at  https://jslmi.org/volunteer/

Feel free to call me with any questions.

Rosh Hashanah

Sharing the holidays with residents is one of the great joys of Jewish Senior Life. We’re looking for a volunteer who can lead a short service (materials are provided) at Coville in Oak Park at 4pm on Friday, October 4, the second day of Rosh Hashanah.

Need Cooks!

Or at least ace sandwich makers. We’re looking for a few good people who can roll up the delicious sandwiches Marvin’s Bistro’s and Krohlik’s Café’s customers love, and who enjoy shmoozing with our customers – every penny helps Jewish Senior Life! Not a cook? No worries – we also need a few cashiers.

Visitors, Arts and Crafts, Games

We are looking for people of any age who would like to come and visit our residents in both Oak Park and West Bloomfield.

The High Holidays are coming soon and the boutique has cards and gifts to start 5785 off right! Whether you need a new honey dish or a hostess gift, come check out our gifts and Judaica.

And while you’re there, check out the spring/summer sale items. Stock up or treat yourself to something special for 25% off!

RECIPE OF THE WEEK

While beef burgers get all the spotlight in the summer months, it’s great to have a tasty veggie burger up your sleeve, especially for early fall. These are fantastic with some tahini sauce drizzled over them.

To Merely Repeat the Year?

Nearly one full year has passed since the tragic day of October 7th.

The word in Hebrew for year is “Shanah.” Shanah also means to repeat. Typically, we repeat our actions and deeds of the last year.

To repeat means to do what we did last year. A new year, however, must bring in its wake added opportunity to increase zest, love, passion, interest and focus on the performance of our every deed. Our Jewish faith, prayer, Torah study and tradition is far too rich to merely repeat.

The sad occurrence of October 7 and all those unfortunate families who have lost dear loved ones beg us to infuse more life, vitality, sincerity and meaning into our daily activities, especially those directly related to our lives as Jews.

Although the year will be repeated, we need to see to it to infuse our deeds this year with a sense of newness and fiery passion, so that this coming year will not merely be a repeat of last year.

L’Chaim!

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
