JOYFUL OYS

by Jo Strausz Rosen

I remember evenings when my young children would transform our family room fireplace hearth into a stage, creating songs and dances, complete with musical instruments and costumes. Their comedic roles and self-made “stage names” never failed to send us into fits of laughter. Even the adults, especially my dad, would join in, dazzling us with magic tricks or showing off his double-jointed feats of strength.

Now, the next generation — my grandchildren, great-nieces and great-nephews — keep this beloved tradition alive.

FRIENDS

Every day, there is something wonderful going on at Jewish Senior Life. It may be a big event like our upcoming Family Fall Festival on Sunday, September 22, our Lives Well Lived Comedy event on November 17 or the wonderful interactions our volunteers bring to all of our residences every day. Just a smile and a chat are often the best experiences to be had around here.

We’d love to have you come enjoy the heimishness! Call me and let’s talk about how you might become a part of it!

HASTINGS STREET HISTORY

Meer resident Live and Learn participants rode the bus to the Detroit Historical Museum this week and walked through history to Hastings Street, “an enclave for Detroit's Jewish Immigrants from 1880-1930, where everyday life was full of choices, adversities, innovations, triumphs and tensions.” The busy exhibit showcases artifacts and storytelling, offering a rare peek into Jewish life of the period. The group of 12 marveled at the historic photos and objects donated by families who resided in the area. Malka Braunstein noted aloud, “There was no mezuzah on the butcher shop door, but there should have been.”

Wendy Handler, Live and Learn Project Consultant, enjoyed the hour tour and noted the residents’ interest. “It seemed like everyone enjoyed learning and remembering about Hastings Street. Our docent, Margery Jablin, board member of Jewish Historical Society and a devoted Meer volunteer, taught us so much about the history. She was wonderful. There were many people at the exhibit who were there to catch the final days of it before it will be removed. Margery hopes that one day a history of the Jews in Michigan will be a standalone museum. We hope so too.”

MOVIE MAGIC

Fleischman staff, residents and some family members joined special needs enrichment campers from The J for a fun-filled afternoon at the Farmington Civic Movie Theater. Together, they enjoyed a screening of Inside Out 2, complete with popcorn and refreshments. "The movie was such a mood lifter," said Jurgita Atanaskovski. "Everyone should go see it. It was a pleasure to share these moments."

SING ALONG

Fabulous Detroit songstress Vanessa Carr sang everyone's favorite melodies, from Frank Sinatra and Shirley Bassey to Liza Manelli, Barbra Streisand and Lady Gaga today in the Hechtman 1 Activity Room.

Rabbi Dovid S. Polter, Community Chaplain

To My Readership

The Torah beckons each of us to contribute to society and community primarily by means of one’s writing skills, oratory skills and financial ability.

I have been fortunate to orally engage with esteemed seniors over the course of years serving as Community Chaplain. I must say that more than I have taught and shared with seniors, I have gained. Ever since I was invited to contribute weekly through writing a reflection on this platform, I have assumed the responsibility and privilege to utilize one more skill, that of inspiring through the medium of writing. I wish to thank the Jewish Senior Life Development Team and JSL coordinators of this weekly newsletter and especially to you, the readers for supporting me through this second skill and opportunity to share my thoughts.

Hopefully as a result, our lives have been enriched and our perspectives and attitudes honed. Please contemplate how you can begin lending your skills to your surroundings.

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
