THE BROWN MEMORY CARE PAVILION

By Jo Strausz Rosen

Located on the third floor of the Fleischman Residence, the Dorothy & Peter D. Brown Memory Care Pavilion provides a warm and family-like environment for older adults with memory impairments and/or dementia-related conditions.

The apartments of the Brown Memory Care Pavilion center around a family-style dining room, Kosher kitchen and living areas where residents enjoy the comforts of home including delicious meals and snacks, just like Mama used to make. Programs and services enhance daily life for residents, who may also join the unique and plentiful programs of the Fleischman Residence/ Blumberg Plaza. Additionally, residents have easy access to the programming of the Brown Jewish Community Adult Day Program, connected to the facility.

Save the Date Sunday, May 21, 2023 and join us at Shaarey Zedek for our 30th Annual Celebration!

Proceeds from this yearly event help enhance the quality of life for JSL residents with an emphasis on subsidizing the cost of food for low-income or indigent residents. Everyone benefits from this event by coming together to acknowledge these selfless older adults in our community for their contributions over their lifetime.

THIS WEEK AT JSL

In honor of Grandparents Day last weekend, Hechtman residents had a “grand” time in the Activity Room. Residents enjoyed fun snacks and a performance of Motown and R&B music by Cheryll Johnson.

Meer residents, Audrey Demak and Margaret Pathak were looking for some new and stimulating exercise and came up with Hula Dancing. Myriam Cohen, Life Enrichment Coordinator turned to – YouTube for the answer. “These two women are eager to try any activity, and are always happy with smiles on their faces and loads of enthusiasm.”

EIGHT OVER EIGHTY LUNCHEON

Left to Right Rene Lichtman, Sophie Klisman, Jerry Soble, Shirley Benyas and Sylvia Starkman.

Recipients of the 2022 Eighty Over Eighty Tikkun Olam Awards enjoyed a special lunch at the Soul Café to renew old friendships and meet in person after a long 2 years of COVID isolation. Some of the recipients have known each other since childhood. CEO, Nancy Heinrich and Executive Director of Development, Jo Rosen attended and shared news from JSL as well as lively conversation during the luncheon. Rene Lichtman is quite busy creating a film about life in France during the war. Sophie Klisman continues to be an avid walker and speaks on behalf of the Zekelman Holocaust Museum and the IDF. Jerry Soble has been boating, playing tennis twice a week and painting portraits. Shirley Benyas was honored to walk down the aisle at the wedding of her granddaughter, and she was also asked to sing. Sylvia Starkman continues to participate in her weekly Torah study group and shared a delicious recipe for her Shabbos chicken. We missed seeing Joe Jacobson, who just returned from England with his wife, Nancy – perfectly timed to witness the British people coming together during the pomp and circumstance of the Queen’s funeral. Rae Scharfman and Charles Danto were also unavailable due to their busy schedules.

Everyone is looking forward to participating in the 30th Anniversary Eight Over Eighty Celebration next May 21, 2023. Nominations for new honorees are coming in daily. Please follow this link to nominate someone special you know.

A Lesson from a Tombstone

Wherever we find ourselves we can glean life lessons even in our visits to a cemetery as I did a short while ago.

As I was passing through the cemetery, my eyes chanced upon a tall, 100-year-old tombstone. Morgenbesser was the family name of the deceased.

Morgenbesser in Yiddish means tomorrow (ought to be) better. It imparts the message of daily self-scrutiny and self-pledge.

I paused and reflected its message, “Will my tomorrow be better than today?”

This was a vital message I learned from a tombstone. As long as we have a tomorrow, we would be wise to plan to make it even better than today.

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
