SIGNALS

By Jo Strausz Rosen

John Stewart, singer, and songwriter with the famed Kingston Trio, once told Roseanne Cash, “We’re all just radios, helping to pick up each other’s signals.” Cash said her life was changed in that moment.

Later, Roseanne Cash spoke to NPR’s Manoush Zomorodi about “Her Life and Legacy” as the daughter of Johnny Cash. Zomorodi interviewed Roseanne about her Ted Talk. Check it out!

Cash recalled and sometimes lamented her relationships. She shared memories of her familial roots in the art of musical poetry that is country music. Cash said: “The strongest signals that come to me are musical. I can tune into a revolution of the heart. Some songs have been postcards from my future. There is a song for every loss, celebration, unspoken need, and longing.”

FLASHBACK FRIDAY

This Flashback Friday is from a June 2017 JN feature on our CEO, Nancy Heinrich.

By Vivian Henoch

A Jewish communal leader with true Yiddishkeit in her spirit, Nancy Heinrich, 56, couldn’t be better suited for her pivotal role as CEO of Jewish Senior Life. She is fluent enough in Russian to greet the community’s older adults from the former Soviet Union in their native language. By profession and long practice, she is a real estate attorney who’s held a seat at the table over discussions of critical issues of Jewish communal concern.

By family and collegial ties, Nancy is well connected to Federation’s network of agencies and board leaders. Her brother, Brian Siegel is CEO of the Jewish Community Center. Her husband, Robert Heinrich, a strategic planning consultant to families, businesses and charities and Founder of Soul of Wealth, is a longtime community volunteer and a current co-chair of the Day School allocations committee of the Jewish Federation.

THIS WEEK AT JSL

Meer residents enjoyed a beautiful day at Kensington Metro park this week, including a picnic and a ride aboard the Island Queen.

Hechtman Apartments residents came together to celebrate Dream Cruise this week with a performance from a wild and wonderful Elvis impersonator as they enjoyed a 50’s themed lunch with great décor.

FRIENDS of Jewish Senior Life is looking for volunteers to help with some fun and interesting activities. Please take a look and let us know if one of these sounds like it’s up your alley.

SOUP, SALAD and SANDWICHES – Our Bistro and Café are so popular we’re expanding to 5 days a week, so we’ll need lots of volunteers to shmooze and serve our residents. Shifts daily 2-3 hours are at lunchtime. Tell your friends and sign up for a shift!

FASHION FUN – Help residents show their style! The Meer boutique needs a volunteer for Fridays in September.

BINGO! – Lead Hechtman residents in a rousing weekly Bingo game.

ART, MAJ, BRIDGE AND MORE – We have all kinds of activities that need volunteers and we’re always happy to invent new ones – let us know your passion!

Please email or call Beth Robinson at brobinson@jslmi.org / 248-592-5062 for more information or to sign up. Or click the link below to fill out the volunteer form.

You Are Note-Worthy…

…and so is your family member, neighbor, and friend.

Now (a month before Rosh Hashanah) is the perfect time to prepare your New Year greeting cards (notes) or phone calls. Dig deep within yourself to find just the right words, wishes, and feelings to convey. So will your family member, neighbor, and friend do for you.

Each one of us deserves our full basket of blessings as we approach the New Year, Rosh Hashanah 5783/2023.

Sweet Expressions. A single word can make or break a world. One extra kind word is what your spouse, neighbor or friend may be anxiously waiting to receive. A kind word is best received when given sweetly in soft tones from someone with a joyful demeanor.

As a memento, I once distributed honey sticks at a program for seniors before Rosh Hashanah. One resident spontaneously remarked, “Rabbi, how does this write?” I thanked her for her hidden insight.

“Mrs. S., this is actually a honey stick, not a writing pen, but your words speak volumes.” How brilliant to compare a pen to a honey stick. Every written word, message, or delivery can be inscribed with sweetness. Wouldn’t we all appreciate a kind word right now?

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
