DRIVING MISS DAISY
By Jo Strausz Rosen
The ability to travel around town, going wherever we want - whenever we want, is a freedom that most of us enjoy. We take for granted that we can slip behind the wheel of a vehicle and drive off without giving it much thought. But for a portion of the sage-ing population, once routine outings like shopping, going to the grocery store, the library, social gatherings, or doctor’s appointments have become a monumental challenge. As we age, health conditions may impact driving and we must find other methods for getting to and from our daily activities. Age-related vision changes and eye disease, medications, hearing loss, limited mobility, reduced strength, and longer reaction time are just a few reasons why we might no longer drive. But fear not. Residents at JSL can schedule their drives and ride in style with our live saving drivers.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
Fleischman resident - Sanford Pearlman turned 100 this week! He says, "the key to living is finding happiness and staying fit with exercise." Sandy celebrated with his favorite treat, carrot cake.
EIGHT OVER EIGHTY
Sophie Klisman, 92, remembers her early life in Poland as the youngest of 4. Her memory of beautiful Friday nights with delicious food on the white tablecloth adorned by candlesticks stays with her. Saturdays the whole family would walk to Synagogue. She felt great love from her parents. She went to school up through the 4th grade, but then at the age of 10 in 1939, Nazi Germany occupied Poland and forced her family to move into the Lodz ghetto. Food became scarce and Sophie had to work in a knitting shop where the tablecloths, bedspreads, hats, scarves, and gloves she learned to make were shipped to German soldiers. Sophie was devastated by the loss of members of her family and with strength, fortitude, endurance, and luck, she and her sister survived living in three Nazi concentration camps before immigrating to America. It’s Sophie's incredible story, documented in the book by her daughter, Lori Klisman Ellis, 4456 Miles: A Survivor’s Search for Closure: Awakening Her Daughter’s Search For Understanding the Holocaust. Our interview with her is one of the Eight Over Eighty Tikkun Olam stories with a very happy ending. We are proud to introduce you to her at our 29th Annual event on May 22, virtually, at noon.

THIS WEEK'S RECIPE
Crispy Coated BBQ Cauliflower Poppers

Ingredients:
1 head of cauliflower, cleaned and broken into pieces
1 cup mayonnaise
1 cup of bbq sauce
2 cups corn flake crumbs

Directions:
1. In a medium size bowl combine mayonnaise and bbq sauce
2. Coat cauliflower pieces into mayonnaise bbq sauce mixture
3. Dip cauliflower pieces in corn flake crumbs.
4. Line corn flake coated cauliflower pieces on a lightly greased baking sheet (I like to use parchment paper for easy cleanup) and bake on 450 for about 20 to 25 minutes until outside is slightly crispy. (I like a crunchy coating with slightly burnt edges)

Count Your Blessings

The past two years has undoubtedly taught us to count our blessings.

The expression, “Count your blessings” may be rooted in something more sublime, namely, in the Torah (Bible) of our Creator. It is not merely a simple human expression but rather bears deeper spiritual meaning.

Let's uncover its origin in the sacred Torah:

During King David's reign, there was a widespread epidemic that took the lives of many people. As an antidote, King David established a new ritual to be incorporated in daily life. He advised that each individual recite 100 blessings daily. His message spread and the epidemic came to an end.

Fast forward to the present. As we come out of the Covid pandemic, it is important to increase our daily (outgoing) blessings to G-d, to our fellow man and to be sure to "count our blessings” that they reach 100. We each can offer blessings to one another and count those as our eternal measure of safety and protection.
