THE MENSCH IN THE PINK STETSON
|
Today is bittersweet because we say “Adios” to one of our most dedicated patrons and volunteers, the effervescent, Elaine Beresh, who relocated from Michigan to Texas to begin a new life with her family. We wish her well and send her off with love and gratitude from our staff for all that she has done for our agency through the years.

Since 2009, librarian, Amanda Bacalis has served as the Outreach Coordinator for the West Bloomfield Library. Every month she brings large containers of books to share at Jewish Senior Life’s Meer and Hechtman Apartments.
Our residents always look forward to Amanda’s visits and are eager to make their choices. Amanda accommodates individual requests from residents, reserves books and brings them during her scheduled visits. Amanda has gotten to know our JSL residents and their tastes in literature. She also makes recommendations specific to each of the individuals.
Next month Amanda will be retiring from her post. She says her visits to Jewish Senior Life have been very rewarding. It has provided her great joy to place a book in a resident’s hands. JSL thanks Amanda for providing a meaningful service to our residents while enhancing their quality of life. We hope she will continue to visit her friends at JSL.

Tomato, Peach, and Burrata Panzanella Salad
Ingredients
1 package mixed greens
Crostini, store-bought or homemade
1 ball of Burrata
1 heirloom tomato, sliced thinly
1 peach, thinly sliced
1 sprig fresh mint leaves, rough chop
1 sprig fresh basil leaves, rough chop
1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
Olive oil, for drizzling
Honey, for drizzling
Sumac, sprinkle
Pink Himalayan sea salt
Cracked pepper
Directions
1) One hour prior to serving the salad, place heirloom tomatoes and peaches into a bowl. Drizzle lightly with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper.

3) Place the crostini slices along the side of the platter.
4) Scatter the tomato and peach mixture, along with their juices, over the mixed greens and crostini slices.

SHABBAT SHALOM
Rabbi Dovid S. Polter, Community Chaplain
Woodward Avenue & the Dream Cruise
Our local Woodward Avenue was chosen to be the road upon which classic vintage vehicles cruise and bring much joy and nostalgia to locals and to visitors from afar. Historically, Woodward Avenue was the first paved road in the USA. For that reason, it is considered the number 1 highway.
For years, the Dream Cruise has provided a great weekend of entertainment. Let us take a moment to entertain ourselves with what might be considered the soul and spirit of Woodward Avenue.
The first paved road marks the first smooth terrain and journey. Prayer is our spiritual journey. Our goal is for our prayer to reach heaven on a paved path with a smooth journey, like those vehicles that majestically peruse Woodward Avenue. To whom are we reaching out in prayer? To the only ONE (# 1 highway) - namely our Creator.
As our community becomes a welcoming spot for many who come to observe the annual Woodward Avenue Dream Cruise, let us hope that our personal journey of prayer travels on a paved road reaching the One Above.
Currently, the Woodward Avenue Shul (WAS) is proudly situated on Woodward Avenue (just South of the zoo). It is a warm and homey place where one could shed their heartfelt prayers.

L’Chaim!
More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
