| As the Days of Awe approach, I find myself reminiscing, as I do every year, about my parents. I remember us all living under one roof, attending High Holy Days at Temple Emanu-El, and of course, getting new clothes to welcome the New Year. The pomp and circumstance of the Holiday conjures memories of my Rabbi wearing his “dress whites” and the special bonus choir in white robes and everyone in the congregation wishing each other “Shanah Tovah.” I felt the presence of Gd in the sanctuary and in myself. Spirituality was always in me, and I was and still am a believer in Hashem. | VOLUNTEER OF THE WEEK - JN ARTICLE |
Jewish Senior Life (JSL) of Metropolitan Detroit nominated Rose Cooper, 95, of West Bloomfield as Volunteer of the Week for her years of dedication to the nonprofit.
“Rose has been a longtime volunteer for JSL in Sharon’s Boutique (located at the Fleischman Residence on the JCC campus) and takes responsibility for purchasing, marketing within the shop, sales and pricing the merchandise, too. She is a dedicated volunteer, and we love her energy and style,” said Jo Strausz Rosen, executive director of development at Jewish Senior Life.
| ROYAL FAREWELL & ROSH HASHANAH |
Either due to the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II last week, or the period of soul-searching that always accompanies the Jewish New Year which starts on Sunday night, my mind keeps going to a quote that is pinned on my office wall.
The advice by Rabbi Simcha Bunim of Peshischa (1765-1827) states: “Every person should always carry two slips of paper – one in the right pocket and one in the left. On one piece of paper should be written ‘The entire world was created just for me.’ On the other should be written ‘I am but dust and ashes.”

30 years ago, Jewish Senior Life’s Eight Over Eighty celebration was established in our community to honor eight remarkable individuals, each 80 years of age or older. The Tikkun Olam Award has been bestowed on people each year for their work in helping to “Repair Our World.”
Save the Date Sunday, May 21, 2023 and join us at Shaarey Zedek for our 30th Annual Celebration!
Proceeds from this yearly event help enhance the quality of life for JSL residents with an emphasis on subsidizing the cost of food for low-income or indigent residents. Everyone benefits from this event by coming together to acknowledge these selfless older adults in our community for their contributions over their lifetime.
Do you know a special older adult who exemplifies Tikkun Olam?

L’Chaim!
More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
