THE MAGIC OF FRIENDLY VISITS

By Jo Strausz Rosen

Recently on a particularly gorgeous fall day, I took a walk around the magnificent tree-lined campus of Jewish Senior Life in West Bloomfield. As I walked outside and admired the foliage and inhaled deeply the sweet fresh air, I felt relaxed, and my senses were awakened. When I walk without a particular agenda, I experience a sense of excitement, and an appreciation of life around me.

OPEN HOUSE

Over 40 families came out to tour the JSL campus and meet with residents and staff this past Sunday at the West Bloomfield JSL Open House. The community visited with residents in the buildings, toured apartments and sampled hot and cold cider and delicious donuts. They witnessed delightful programs in action and saw how everyone was engaged in favorite activities as they enjoyed special music by talented area musicians, making the campus come alive.

VETERANS DAY

Across both of our campuses today, JSL is honoring our resident veterans with special ceremonies and activities. Meer Apartments is hosting a ceremony involving its veterans with guest speakers, poetry readings, discussions, and music including The Star-Spangled Banner and America the Beautiful. The Dorothy & Peter Brown Jewish Community Adult Day Program is baking special red, white, and blue cupcakes in honor of Veterans Day. Participants will listen to the history and play some word games. Themed music therapy will be songs from the Armed Services. Photos and mementos brought in by participants and staff will be reviewed.

At Coville Apartments, residents will be waving flags and wearing red, white, and blue light up necklaces. They will also enjoy listening to a poetry reading about Veterans Day. Both Teitel and Prentis Veterans will receive special certificates for their service.

Thank you to all of our veterans for the sacrifices you have made.

2 carrots, chopped

3 cloves garlic, minced

Olive Oil

3 teaspoons oregano

1 and 1/2 teaspoons cumin

Pinch of red pepper flakes

2 bay leaves

1 can crushed or diced tomatoes

6 cups Vegetable Broth

2 cups Red Lentils

For Serving

1 lemon

Salt

Pepper

Ta'amti Feta Cheese

Fresh cleaned parsley

Pepitas

Directions

1) In a large pot, sauté onion, carrots, and garlic in plenty of olive oil on medium heat until softened.

2) Add oregano, cumin, red pepper flakes, and the bay leaves and toast for a few seconds.

3) Add the tomatoes, broth, and red lentils. Simmer until lentils are completely soft.

4) To purée: either use an immersion blender to blend the entire soup if you want a purée-style soup, or remove a few cups and blend in a blender for a creamy broth with chunks of veggies.

    Lazar the Dog

Dogs are special. When they are put to sleep, they too deserve a eulogy. Lazar was a most comforting dog housed here at Fleischman several years back. He was tame, sweet, and always welcoming.

One Monday morning as I made my way into my office at Fleischman, I was greeted by a group of residents lamenting his loss. They were sharing fond stories and memories of Lazar.

"Rabbi, might you have words of comfort and courage to share?"

"Yes", I replied.

"From where do we get the name Lazar?" I asked. "It is short for the Hebrew name Eliezer. Eliezer was the name of one of the two children of Moses.

He was named so to celebrate G-d's kindness in saving Moses from the hands of Pharaoh." "Eli" means my G-d. "Ezer" means helped or saved.

Now, I reassured the residents that we too will be helped from above. Lazar, the short version of Eliezer will soon be replaced by another kindhearted dog.

Kelev in Hebrew means dog. It makes the two words "kulo lev" meaning all heart and emotions.

To remember this comfort that the name Lazar imparts, Lazar has a stone just outside the front door of Fleischman Residence. In life, we cherish everything that comes our way. Each gift in its proper time is worthy of either celebrating or grieving.

L’Chaim!

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
