CONCERNS ABOUT AGING
By Jo Strausz Rosen
As 10,000 baby boomers turn 65 each day, the demographics of America are changing. This expanding group of Americans is redefining the senior lifestyle with unique perspectives on aging and the role local communities can play in helping us get the most from our future years. Couples often have conflicting attitudes toward aging. Some try to focus on the positive parts of later life, and some get wrapped up in the negatives.
PLARN
Jewish Senior Life residents are always on the lookout for ways they can recycle and repair the world. The Green Committee of NCJW Michigan focuses on important environmental issues. A project these wonderful women began aims to reduce the amount of plastic going to landfills and water sources. Their idea is turning plastic bags into sleeping mats for homeless individuals. NCJW accepts our reusable plastic bags and then transforms them into plastic yarn (PLARN) with a pair of scissors. The ‘yarn’ is then knitted or crocheted to create comfortable sleeping mats.”
Recycle your reusable plastic bags and learn how we can all do our part to help. What a fabulous sustainable art project at any age!! Call 248-355-3300 ext. 0

SHABBAT SHALOM
Rabbi Dovid S. Polter, Community Chaplain

Take a Deeper Look

An artist, after suffering a personal tragedy, wrote to his spiritual mentor about his depression and despair. The mentor responded, “The genius of the artist is his ability to detach himself from the external qualities of the object he is portraying, to look deeply into the object and see its essence. He must then be able to express that essence so that whoever views the painting, sees an essence that he, the viewer, had never noticed in the object itself.”

The same applies to everyone. One’s inner essence is Divine. One must take great care that the secondary ‘external’ matters of one’s life should not obscure one’s essence and the ultimate goal and purpose of one’s creation. The trials, tragedies, and difficulties of life must be seen for what they really are - part of the Divine system of toil and endeavor, which ultimately enables us to achieve the highest levels of happiness and goodness.
