Shabbat Shalom
Back in Israel
We are here in Israel attending our son, Mataan's final Israeli army ceremony as he completed his extensive 15 month training. He has committed to serve in the IDF for 3 years and will discharged from service November 2018. Pride and respect are in abundance by our family for his dedication.

Israel Defense Force
Forming the IDF on Independence Day May 14, 1948, was  David Ben-Gurion's (Prime Minister/Minister of Defense) first order of business.  The soldiers transitioned from the underground fighting units of the Hagana and the Palmach to the official Defense Force for the brand new (legally established by the United Nations 1947 Partition Plan) Jewish State of Israel.  The first neighborly gift was all out war by Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan with supporting efforts from Iraq and Saudi Arabia. The newly formed Israeli troops were underdogs, but thankfully triumphed. The Israeli stamina was challenged in every decade. 1948 (Independence), 1956 (Sinai), 1967 (Six Day), 1973 (Yom Kippur), 1982 (Lebanon), 1990s (1st Intifada), 2000s (2nd Intifada), 2006 (Lebanon), 2009 (Gaza), 2012 (Gaza), 2014 (Gaza). And any of these defeat could have led to the defeat of our Jewish Peoplehood. There will be no shortage of anti-Israel and anti-semitic sentiment which is why a strong Jewish homeland is necessary for us as Jews to continue our existence and our responsibly of Tikkun Olam.

Diversity is widespread in the IDF

First Troops of the IDF
While in Israel for these next few weeks, my fingers and computer will be on break from weekly creations.  I've written this week's message and the next two Shabbat emails prior to my departure so you'll need a different reliable non-alternative source for current events. Please avoid Breitbart, Infowars, Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck.  The week's birthday and community calendar list is up-to-date as well as a new "Parting Thought" image, so you can continue to check them.   Also, I can read all replies so feel free to respond.

Fat Tuesday
For those who celebrate...Happy Paczki Day (Feb. 28) also known as Fat Tuesday and Mardi Gras, prior to the beginning of Lent.  Paczki is a Polish donut similar to our Israeli Sufganiyot that we eat during Hanukkah.  Hamtramck is the home of the Paczkis.

Wishing you and your families a
Sweet and Peaceful Shabbat Shalom

Condolences to dear friends, Betsy Appleton and Eric Zuckerman and their family on the passing of Betsy's beloved brother, Douglas "Dogfish" Wagner Appleton z"l (age 69), father to Una. He was a big-hearted peace-loving artist who always viewed the world through optimistic eyes. May his memories and love bring comfort to those who mourn his passing as he was a true blessing unto his family and community.  FYI, Doug sounds like the Hebrew word for Fish, hence the nickname.

Condolences to Rabbi Paul and Wendy Yedwab and their immediate and extended family on the passing of Paul's father, Rabbi Stanley Yedwab z"l. Like father, like son, both rabbis served/serve their communities with distinction.  May his spirit and dedication bring comfort to those who knew and loved him and now mourn his passing. No doubt, he was truly a blessing unto his family and community.
Happy Birthday
