DVAR TORAH - PARSHAT YITRO

The Parsha this week is named in honor of the father in law of Moses - Jethro. The greatness of Jethro was evidenced when, upon arrival at the desert encampment, he was told of the wondrous events that had rescued the Jewish people. The Torah relates: "Vayichad Yisro – Jethro rejoiced." Our Sages explain that the word vayichad is an expression of joy tempered by reservation, for even as Jethro heard the amazing events, he also felt a pang of sadness for his former friends, the Egyptians. Nevertheless, Jethro proclaimed two words that have become the hallmark of our people throughout the centuries: "Baruch Hashem – Blessed is Hashem!" "Baruch Hashem" has been our response to all the challenges of life – to the joys as well as to the trials.

Insights From the Daf: Masechet Nazir

The word Nazir appears first in the Hebrew Bible in Genesis chapter 49, verse 26, which speaks of the blessings given to Joseph by his father Jacob. Jacob used the term because Joseph spent time in forced isolation from his family to fulfill the will and plan of God, making Joseph a Nazirite before the laws of Moses and thereby implying that there was no sin attached to this status by Jacob, who was describing how blessed Joseph was of the God of his fathers.
