WORDS FROM RABBI KANTOR
Gratitude for Our Neighbors

Professor Shaul Magid wrote in reaction to the horrific events of last Shabbat:

To America: I am a Jew. In our tradition, we have a venerated, but too often overlooked value, called hakarat ha-tov. It literally translates as “the recognition of the good/goodness” but more colloquially it means gratitude. As an American Jew, I want to show you, America, gratitude… four of our people, including a rabbi, found themselves in harm’s way… And you, America, White, Black, Brown, Asian, Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Sikh, secular, you were there for us, you showed us this is about all of us. You showed us with your voices and tweets, and illustrated that the philosopher Hegel was right, “if all are not free, none are free.”

At the same time, we must not shy away from the fact that this event transpired due to an age-old anti-semitic trope of Jewish control of the world. Unfortunately, Colleyville is another name that we can add to the growing list of Squirrel Hill, Poway, Jersey City, Monsey, Charlottesville, and others - all locations of violent anti-semitic attacks or rallies promoting, encouraging, and supporting attitudes which would lead to more attacks. And, as if that is not enough, I will point out that this week marks one year since Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene revealed to the world the secret “Jewish Space Laser Program”. (Click Here if you don't remember this)

So how do we process such a situation? How do we both express our gratitude for the outpouring of support and at the same time acknowledge the evil that lies just below the surface that is very real and relevant to all of our lives?
#1 – WE SHOW UP TO SYNAGOGUE THIS WEEK TO SUPPORT ONE ANOTHER.
#2 – WE REFUSE TO HIDE IN CLOSETS - TAKING OUR "KIPPOT OFF", RATHER WE STAND UP FOR THE JUSTICE AND HOLINESS THAT OUR TRADITION CALLS US TO BRING TO THE WORLD.
#3 WE ACKNOWLEDGE, AS OUR TORAH PORTION TEACHES US, THAT THERE ARE TWO DIFFERENT STEREOTYPES OF NON-JEWS THAT WE MAY ENCOUNTER IN OUR LIVES: Amelek who attempted to wipe the Jews out, and Yitro, Moses’s father-in-law, who ends up supporting, advising, and donating to the Israelite community.

This Shabbat we will proudly come together for prayer, healing, gratitude, and pride in who we are and what we stand for as Jews in America in 2022.
RABBI KANTOR'S RESOURCES
Music to Inspire
"We Will Build A World of Love"

Based on Psalm 89:3 Rabbi Menachem Creditor wrote this song for his daughter, born right after 9/11. He wrote:

"This world will be built by love: ours and God's. In the best and worst of moments, non-fundamentalist "believers" and "atheists" are reaching for the same hope using different language. Amen to both."

In August of 2020 members of our congregation came together virtually to record this song. In a week when so many of us need healing I bring you a song and a prayer for a better world that we can all make in partnership with each other and with God.

Rabbi Danya Ruttenberg writes books about the messy business of trying to be a person in the world, and how spirituality can inform and transform that work. Sometimes that’s about parenting, sometimes feminism, sex, God, justice, or joy. It’s all interconnected, isn’t it? She’s a highly-sought keynote speaker and lecturer who has been named by Newsweek and The Daily Beast as one of ten “rabbis to watch,” and one of the top 50 most influential women rabbis.

23 months into the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of Detroit area Jewish families requiring food assistance is still near the highest it’s ever been — but you can help. In the spirit of Tikkun Olam, we’ve organized a soup drive to help Yad Ezra meet their increased demand.

It’s easy to give what you can. Just bring your donations to the Jewish Federation building in Bloomfield Hills. There’s a drop off box in the lobby and you can come by anytime during normal business hours.
Drop off times:
January 3rd – 31st Monday – Thursday 8 am – 5 pm
Friday, 8 am – 3 pm
Or you can donate funds directly to the soup drive by clicking below if you’re out of town or want someone to buy on your behalf.
