Rabbi Kenter's D'var Cantor

When I was at Camp Ramah this past week, the musician in residence was Josh Warshawsky. Among the music he shared with camp was from the liturgy, where it says, "May Rabu Ma'asecha Adonai-How great are Your deeds/creations!" That prayer is meant to remind us that what God does is amazing. Are we still able to be inspired by the awesome stuff that God has created?

There are certain acts that are designed for the spectacle and to impress the viewer. Whether it be the earth itself opening to swallow the leaders of the rebellion against Moses and Aaron in this week's Torah portion or a parade south of the border, it is meant to amaze us with its magnificence. But when we read this prayer in the weekly service, I don't believe it is there to remind us of those outstanding moments from our past (or present) like the sea splitting or earth opening. It is calling upon to be amazed by what we see all around us. Everything that God made is beautiful.

I was reminded of this on my (very early) return from camp. Being on the road at 5:30 in the morning allowed be to see blue pink sky beginning to shine over the lifting fog. We saw the sun rising over the mountains and working to break through the mist. As I drove a sense of amazement overcame me and I was blown away. Mah Rabu Ma'asecha Adonai.

Donations
There are many blessings that happen in all of our lives such as the birth of a child, grandchild, or great-grandchild; the engagement or marriage of a loved one; or a promotion at work or a volunteer award.  These events lend balance to times of sadness, such as the death or illness of a loved one. We at Kehillat Beth Israel are grateful for the opportunity to share these moments with you - to be a source of community in both times of celebration and times of sorrow.  Below you will find some of the events in our community from the last few weeks.  Please continue to share with us your happy occasions so that we may share them  here in the future.

And in the spirit of gratitude, we also take this opportunity to thank the members of our community for their charitable gifts to the synagogue.  We could not do the important work that we do at Kehillat Beth Israel without your generous support. We are so thankful for your continued contributions that allow us to grow and thrive. Todah Rabbah!
