CONGREGATIONAL KIDDUSH
Kiddush this week is generously sponsored by Tetiana and Yuriy Rekhnyuk in honour of their son David’s Bar Mitzvah. Mazal Tov!

Congregational Kiddush helps us build connections that make KBI a strong, vibrant community. You can sponsor a Kiddush to honour someone, remember someone, celebrate a Simcha, or “just because!” At this time, we will only be offering a congregational kiddush on the weeks with sponsorship. For more information on these and other sponsorship opportunities, please contact Rena at (613) 728-3501 x225 or rena@kehillatbethisrael.com
RABBI KENTER'S DVAR
This week’s Torah portion contains some of the most famous and important mitzvot in our Torah. It contains interpersonal mitzvot like “do not stand idly by the blood or your neighbour” and “setting aside a corner of your field for the needy” and also contains mitzvot that are just between God and us like “You shall be holy for I, Adonai your God am holy” and the observance of Shabbat. The idea that this portion is trying to convey is that what makes us special and different as a people is our observance of mitzvot; the ways they connect with the Divine and the ways that we connect with our fellow human beings.

With this week’s portion being read this week and in preparation for Shavuot (the holiday where we commemorate receiving the 10 commandments), we are launching May as Mitzvah Month! The objective of this month is to find ways to connect with different mitzvot in lots of different ways. There are our “signature mitzvot” of the month that have special programs attached (registration for these can be found at https://www.kehillatbethisrael.com/may-is-mitzvah-month). There will also be daily posts on our social media about different mitzvot to focus on for that day. And finally, for families (or really anyone), I created a BINGO board for Mitzvot to do over the month (https://mfbc.us/m/cazukh7). Anyone who submits a completed BINGO board to me will receive a prize.

Let’s all prepare for our moment at Sinai by committing anew to engaging in the mitzvot that can and do enrich our lives. What better way to spend the month of May.
MAZAL TOV
Yuriy and Tetiana Rekhnyuk are proud to announce the Bar Mitzvah of David Rekhnyuk on May 7, 2022. David is a bright and kind boy, he accomplished a lot over the last 10 years by playing competitive hockey, playing guitar, and learning Hebrew and French.

He will be going into grade 9 at Pierre Savard School in the fall and plans on taking courses in computer science. David is proud to be following in the footsteps of his lineage by having his Bar Mitzvah. David and his parents are very thankful to KBI, Cantor Green, and Rabbi Kenter for guiding him along his Bar Mitzvah path and teaching him Hebrew.
CONGREGATIONAL INFORMATION
Masks Continue in Shul

Based on the repeated advice from Ottawa Public Health, KBI continues to require all people attending synagogue indoor events to wear personal masks. This provides what OPH calls "the safest approach" for protecting ourselves and others.

When attending a kiddush where food or drinks are consumed, please wear your mask when socializing or when standing at a food service table. Masks are not needed when eating, of course. KBI will revisit this policy in June, after Public Health reviews the provincial and municipal situation.

There are many blessings that happen in all of our lives such as the birth of a child, grandchild, or great-grandchild; the engagement or marriage of a loved one; or a promotion at work or a volunteer award.  These events lend balance to times of sadness, such as the death or illness of a loved one. We at Kehillat Beth Israel are grateful for the opportunity to share these moments with you - to be a source of community in both times of celebration and times of sorrow.

And in the spirit of gratitude, we also take this opportunity to thank the members of our community for their charitable gifts to the synagogue. We could not do the important work that we do at Kehillat Beth Israel without your generous support. We are so thankful for your continued contributions that allow us to grow and thrive. Todah Rabbah!
