WORDS FROM RABBI KANTOR
How Gratitude Can Change Us

We read more and more about how incorporating gratitude into our lives can actually change our outlook on the world. In fact, some researchers claim that it can change the actual “wiring of the brain.”

When we receive something from another person it is the act of saying “thank you” to the person who gave it to us. But the question we will wrestle with is – “is that deep enough?” In his book Thanks A Thousand: A Gratitude Journey, author A.J. Jacobs, chronicles his mission to thank everyone in the world who helped make his morning coffee possible. From the barista to the coffee grower to the trucker to the person who paves the road so the truck can drive to the person responsible for the clean water to brew the coffee he ends up thanking thousands of people who contributed to his daily cup of coffee. CLICK HERE FOR A SHORT SYNOPSIS.

In Judaism, we have incorporated gratitude into our lives through the ritual of saying blessings over what we eat, the normal functioning of our body, and the gorgeous miracles we can witness in the natural world.

The difference between what Jacobs did in his experiment and what the ritualized blessings of our tradition do is include God in the list of those entities that should be thanked.

This lesson could not be starker than in the story of Joseph which we will begin reading this week. As we will see, it is only when Joseph is able to bring God into his world outlook that his fortune begins to change.

Join us this Shabbat as we look at how we might appreciate gratitude, dreams, and Chanukah miracles in a whole new light.

How Thanksgiving helped Jews carve out a piece of the American story

Thanksgiving seems to have all the right ingredients for a holiday that most American Jews can embrace: It doesn’t fall on Shabbat, its roots and message are nonsectarian, and its only real ritual is a multi-course meal.

SOME GOOD NEWS
Mazal tov to Laurie & Howard Novetsky on the Bar Mitzvah of their grandson Ari Wolfe, son of Sarah and Todd Wolfe at Temple Israel. For his mitzvah project, he collected used shoes for the non-profit, ‘Soles 4 Souls.’ This organization provides shoes to poverty stricken countries, creates jobs and decreases waste. He also volunteered with the Temple Israel Food Pantry and donated canned goods to food banks such as Gleaners and Yad Ezra.
OUR DOORS ARE OPEN
