On New Year’s Eve, I walk the campus paths between Fleischman Residence and the Meer Apartments … taking in the quiet and peace of Ring Road in West Bloomfield. I’m feeling the cold around me, breathing warm air into the mask that often fogs my glasses - but keeps me just a bit warmer.

I absorb the remarkable greenspaces, icy tree branches, home to nature that reveals the sounds of birds, the changing light in the endless clouds, shades of gray and pink as the sun sets in the sky… our JSL backyard. I pull down my mask and I am moved by the sights and smells…. fresh snowy air, the woody scent of the ground, bark, leaf, and water… and I’m overcome with emotion, anticipating the New Year, and feeling the change in the seasons. The world in our neck of the woods is magical. The lighted windows speak volumes of our residents’ lives. Reading, writing, socializing, dining, exercising, painting, drawing, singing, performing…. they are finding peace and are so grateful for their comfortable and welcoming homes. They know and feel The JSL Difference.  At this time of year, we think of and appreciate our loving donors, supportive staff and so many generous volunteers who make this all possible…. and they are the ones who bring to life the richness, comfort, and joy for our residents.

We’re not letting the daily presence of COVID in our lives chase us under our covers to hide! Let's focus our attention on the earth and the sky, the warmth of our surroundings, and our friends and supporters, and by doing so, we find purpose, comfort, and joy for this season and throughout the year.

Let’s begin 2022 by focusing on the importance of everyone vaccinating, boosting, and repeating as necessary – for all our sakes. At the same time, let’s celebrate and appreciate our loved ones, families, friends, and all the helpers – our entire JSL family!

THIS WEEK'S RECIPE
Turkey Lachmagine
Lachmagine is a Syrian meat pizza with a tang

INGREDIENTS
2 pounds raw ground turkey or chicken
2 onions, grated, drained
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice (more if you like it really tangy)
½ cup tamerhindi or pomegranate molasses
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon allspice or baharat
15 mini pitas split in half
Garnish: toasted pine nuts, torn mint leaves, pomegranate arils and drizzled tahini

PREPARATION
Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment.

1) In a large bowl, combine, turkey, onions, tomato paste, lemon juice, tamerhindi, salt, and allspice. Mix well.
2) Place the pita rounds on prepared sheet and top each with a heaping tablespoon of the meat mixture spreading to the edges of the pita.
3) Bake until the meat mixture is cooked through, about 30 minutes.

Inspiration Emerges from Ghana, Africa

While sitting in a taxi, gazing at the skyscrapers in New York City, a conversation ensued between the driver, a native of Ghana, and myself.

He shared, “In Ghana, the ritual is that all babies born on the same day of the week are given the same name. For example, all babies born on Sunday bear the same name.”

I was fascinated especially because it is reflected in Jewish tradition. Our sages teach that each day of the week reflects a different character trait. Based on the day of the week a baby is born, he/she will pursue a life commensurate with that day’s respective character trait. One born on Monday will be an angry person because on the second day of creation the waters were divided. One born on Tuesday will be wealthy because on the third day of creation herbage was created. One born on Thursday will be a person who performs deeds of kindness because on this day fish and fowl were created. They are supported by G-d, Who, in kindness, makes the food easily available to them.

A custom in Ghana enlightened me as to the Jewish tradition as well. This is because our world has One Creator truly uniting all of us as one.
