ROSH HASHANAH 5784

by Jo Strausz Rosen

In preparation for and during Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, we search our souls. And we do this together in community.  Community has always been at the heart of the Jewish High Holidays. At Jewish Senior Life of Metropolitan Detroit, residents and staff recognize the importance of living together in a warm and welcoming community. We remember and discuss the cherished sights, tastes, and sounds of Rosh Hashanah. We talk about the taste of honey on our tongues, and the way we used to cling to our mothers as we stood during the somber moments of worship… and the awe-inspiring sounds of the shofar piercing the air to wake us from our slumber every year.

JSL invites you to nominate your candidate for the 2024 event. We recognize eight distinguished leaders in our community, all over the age of 80, who have demonstrated a lifetime of dedication to the Jewish value of Tikkun Olam - repairing the world.

FRIENDS

Last week’s Jewish News contained a piece by Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, titled “A Nation of Storytellers.” He quotes Harvard professor Howard Garner, “Gardner’s argument is that what makes a leader is the ability to tell a particular kind of story – one that explains ourselves to ourselves and gives power and resonance to a collective vision.” He gives the examples of Churchill telling the story of Britain’s indomitable courage and Gandhi speaking of the dignity of India and non-violent protest.

Don’t Write Me Off

At JSL, we are keenly aware of the power of storytelling and are excited to present an evening of storytelling by and about older adults. Our residents show the diversity of their personalities, experiences, abilities, perspectives and interests through their own stories in the book Don’t Write Me Off. We will celebrate the book’s release with an author meet and greet at the upcoming Lives Well Lived: Wrinkles in Time on November 14, at 7pm at The J (formerly called the Jewish Community Center of Metropolitan Detroit).

Lives Well Lived

At Lives Well Lived: Wrinkles in Time, we will also enjoy a program of short documentaries that tell stories of older adults living life well, including Death Metal Grandma, Wendy’s Shabbat, and the Academy Award winning Young at Heart. Young at Heart is the story of filmmaker Sue Marx’s father, artist Louis Gothelf, and his late in life romance with fellow artist Reva Shwayder. And the program will include a tribute to Marx by Jack Lessenberry.

The story we are telling through these projects and every day at JSL is that it’s not over ‘till it’s over and so many older adults at JSL and everywhere are still living life to its fullest.

Please join us. Sponsorship information and tickets are available at jslmi.org/ jsls-lives-well-lived/.

Fall Fuzzies

It’s almost time to rake up the leaves and kick through the piles. Stop in Sharon’s or Meer boutique to pick up warm and wooly sweaters and jackets for all your indoor and outdoor fall adventures!

The start of the new year is a great time to start a new volunteer role. We have opportunities available in the café, the boutiques, programming, the dining room and visiting residents. Call or email me at 248 592-5062 / brobinson@jslmi.org and let me know how you’d like to be part of JSL in 5784!

SHABBAT SHALOM

Rabbi Dovid S. Polter, Community Chaplain

Rosh Hashanah

In the High Holiday liturgy we declare, “Hayom harat olam” — “Today is the birth of the world.” In reality, the creation of the world started a few days earlier, but Rosh Hashanah is the birth of Adam — the first man — through whom the creation of the world reached fruition.

On this day Adam, the progenitor of mankind, made his “Grand Opening.” Annually, on Rosh Hashanah, G-d gives each man and woman the chance to start afresh and make a “grand opening.” There are also those who have a “grand opening” followed very quickly by a “going out of business.”

Let us resolve to stay in business throughout the year, and go from strength to strength in our devotion, passion and observation of Torah and our rich faith. With such an approach our “grand opening” will bring happy and prosperous results.

I wish all my readers Shanah Tova – a blessed happy and healthy New Year.

L’Chaim!

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
