Jewishly Warm and Relevant Shabbat blessings from TBD Religious School
Shabbat words compiled by Gal Kessler Rohs, Education Director, on behalf of Temple Beth David's Religious School team

As we wrap up the High Holidays, with a culmination of Simchat Torah’s celebration tonight, I think about how so many of us TBD friends, joined together in the past few weeks, and on the many levels, to form a united community.
One of these examples was during Sukkot. Men’s club, with the leadership of
Bill Joseph
, gathered together, to build TBD's Sukkah foundations, while
Jason’
s Haskala students, helped put up the fronds. They did so collaboratively, and with mentorship from the men of the men’s club. Meanwhile, Jason explained to his students, that the mitzvah that they were doing, of collaborating with the men’s club, was bringing on another mitzvah, of sitting in the sukkah. This notion of mitzvah goreret mitzvah was paralleled to the one Domino pushing another affect by
Rabbi Keara
, who demonstrated the effect to her students using Dominoes.
On Sunday last, our youngest of students made decorations for the sukkah, and used the help of their 3
rd
and 4
th
grader friends from Miss
Doris
' class to hang all up.
Susan
’s class sat in the sukkah, on the laps of their buddies in Rabbi Keara’s class, and
Cynthia
’s toddlers rode their push cars with the pushing of their peers, into the shade of the Sukkah.
Sarah
’s class crafted the four species from recyclable material, for us to shake shake shake, and perform the mitzvah of shaking the lulav. Meanwhile Miss
Doris
explained to her students, who then passed along the message to the community, about how each part of the four species is related to parts of the body. Once the Sukkah was up, decorated, shaded, and set up, our youth group TOV CHAI, with the leadership of
Lauren
and
Joey
, dined after their Havdalah ritual together. Adult Hebrew education's
Jan
Robertson kindly, fed the team with delicacies of cakes, salads, beverages and more.
The building, decorating, shading, setting up, and arranging for the erection of the Sukkah, was indeed team work. This is a reflection of
Rabbi Lachtman’
s words in his interview for October’s JLife magazine about his honoring. Rabbi says: “Our lives are enriched by affiliation and relationships, and when we share ideas and ideals, we are not a uniform community but a united community.”
I look forward to culminating our High Holidays with you tonight, dear united TBD community, as we celebrate our new incoming students who, too, will unite us ledor vador.
Wishing you a Shabbat Shalom, and a belated Chag Sameach!
Gal Kessler Rohs
, Education Director

Kol Hakavod to Susan Grodsky
and her students and family for advocating for immigrant children
|
|
When someone does something kind, they merit recognition. In my eyes, and as an advocate for children, when someone does something kind for children, that recognition is deepened.
Last religious school year, under the leadership of preschool teacher
Susan Grodsky
, students collected money towards the benefit of other underserved children, who were separated from their parents at borders, because they were unable to pay immigration fees. The unification of families, and the core values of the family, is a value Susan worked on with her students tirelessly. I commend Susan for her leadership, her motivation, and her passion for doing and teaching tikkun olam, in an area so dear to many.
Attached, is a thank you letter from RAICES, the charity Susan and her preschool students raised money for. To find out about RAICES, scroll down to the "useful resources and reading section of this mail:"
Thank you Susan, and those parents who motivated Susan every Sunday morning to follow her dreams of advocacy.

To those who have asked, donated, supported, and loved- Thank you! We are in particular thankful to the

We are still in need of material to enrich the experience of our toddlers. In particular, we are in need of a circle time rug, and soft toys.
We are also, with thanks to
Terry and Jerry Kohl
in the process of planning for a nurturing outdoor space for our lower grade students. If you would like to join me in planning for this space, please reach out to me.
I look forward to hearing from you!
